Description

Overall, this was an engaging and moderately intriguing book for nine tenths of the way, and then for some bizarre reason it all fell apart at the last due to a really poor decision by the author. As we watch her perfect life falling apart, we’re willing her on to discover the truth, for her sake as much our own.

That’s because Erica, disgusting piece of human scum that she is, is also running a racket on two other couples at the same time (related to the main storyline, but I won’t say how) and every so often there would be these other perspectives randomly inserted into the narrative. I enjoyed that several of the characters were morally grey - some were good people who made bad choices, while others were just bad people, and then there were a few characters I was rooting for! That would most likely NEVER happen in real life, and I’m not sure why the teller would even ask for an ID if she wasn’t going to check whose name was on the account. And of course all hospital crew listened to my reading throughout my stomach pumping process agree with my decision! She’d merely smiled, delighted with her pregnancy, and was even secretly smug at how good she felt, how easily her body was handling the changes. But Patrick reacts unexpectedly to her threats and tells Stephanie the truth about the circumstances of his first wife’s death. The tension is high,’ The Times wrote of one of the author’s earlier novels and how true that is of The End of Hertoo. Shari Lapena has done it again - another cracking domestic thriller, and trust me, 'the end' will leave you clamouring for more.

Her eyes are stinging and tearing up, and she leans back against the counter, shaking now that the danger is past. I just deleted a paragraph from my review because anything I say from here on out will give too much away. The glances we gave each other over the twists and turns may have been turning to glances of paranoia by the end . Her thrillers A Stranger in the House, An Unwanted Guest, Someone We Know and The End of Her were all Sunday Times and New York Times bestsellers.

There’s a pair of four-month-old twins with a really nice mom – Stephanie – directly across the street whom Hanna’s become friends with. But while readers are meant to despise Erica with a passion, and to sympathize with the protagonists whose lives she is trying ruin, Shari Lapena isn’t about to let Patrick off the hook either. The first real twist is an effective one which I had to read twice for it to truly sink in, but then the story takes a dramatic turn for the worse with the way it ends. Suddenly, all of Patrick’s past indiscretions are laid bare for everyone to see, jeopardizing his career and the life he has built. I've read all but one of Shari Lapena's thrillers and this book was definitely the biggest page turner of the bunch.

Either Patrick has got to be the unluckiest person in the world to be caught up in all these coincidences that make him look hella suspicious, or quite simply put, he is hiding something. I would like to thank the publisher for the digital ARC provided through Edelweiss in exchange for a candid review!

if you’re one of the many people who counts [ And Then There Were None] among their favorite books, you will love An Unwanted Guest. Stephanie and Patrick are happily married with twins if you don’t count the babies’ heavy colic problem which turns to torturous nightmare with nonstop crying tournament, agitation and restlessness. We got to see chapters from Stephanie and Patrick, Patrick's business partner Niall, as well as several other characters. There's a pair of four-month-old twins with a really nice mom-Stephanie-directly across the street whom Hanna's become friends with. She soon becomes engrossed in her novel, but looks up a little while later when she senses movement across the street. Patrick and I have to put them in the swings and listen to them crying just to bolt down some supper. I've really gotta say, this one had me entertained throughout and it may be my favorite Lapena novel! If you understood completely what I was talking about when I explained this genre, this is a book worth checking out.
