How should I store this medication?

Epimax ® oatmeal cream and Zeroveen ® cream are additionally recommended for use as a soap substitute.

No new patients to receive prescriptions in primary care. Patients already receiving Red Medicines in primary care should be handled on a case by case basis with the support of the Medicines Optimisation team. It's especially important to regularly apply an emollient to your hands and face, as they're exposed to the elements more than any other part of your body. Emulsifying ointment is used to treat dry skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis. It can be used as an ointment or instead of soap Benefits & Features Ovelle Emulsifying Ointment B.P. contains a preservative free blend of ingredients to hydrate and soften all skin types, especially dry skin. Formulated without fragrance or colours, it gently soothes as a moisturiser and cleanses as a soap substitute or bath additive.

The emulsifying ointment leaves a thin layer of oil on the skin's surface that stops water evaporating. Emollients are moisturising treatments applied directly to the skin to soothe and hydrate it. They cover the skin with a protective film to trap in moisture. Medicines that should be initiated by a specialist and prescribed by primary care prescribers only under a shared care protocol, once the patient has been stabilised.

Medicines suitable to be prescribed in primary care / general practice after specialist* recommendation or initiation. Any other emollient with low percentage urea can be used for maintenance following the treatment phase. It's a good idea to protect babies' hands and cheeks with an emollient before mealtimes to stop them getting sore from food and drink. If you experience any of these symptoms, talk to a GP, nurse or pharmacist. Safety advice when using emollients Fire safety Epimax ® original cream - First line option for moderately dry skin as per Notts Emollient Formulary. Comparable to Zerobase ®, Cetraben ® and Diprobase ®.First line - Balneum ® Plus Cream (100g tube) - also contains lauromacrogols. Use only if emollient alone has not helped itching. Ovelle Emulsifying Ointment B.P. contains a preservative free blend of ingredients to hydrate and soften all skin types, especially dry skin. Everyday soaps, shampoos and shower gels usually dry out the skin and can make skin conditions like eczema worse.

People hypersensitive to any of the ingredients may experience skin reactions, such as burning, itching, rash or redness of the skin after using emulsifying ointment. Stop using emulsifying ointment and see your doctor if your skin gets irritated after using it. First line - ImuDERM ® emollient. 5% urea (500g pump dispenser, CliniSupplies Ltd). Recommended for additional use as soap substitute. Use a clean spoon or spatula to remove emollients from a pot or tub. This reduces the risk of infections from contaminated pots. Risk of slipping

When to apply emollients

First line options are Epimax ointment, Zeroderm ® emulsifying ointment and Liquid & white soft paraffin ointment (Fifty:50). They help prevent patches of inflammation and flare-ups of these conditions. Types of emollients Lotions Be careful not to slip when using emollients in a bath or shower, or on a tiled floor. Protect the floor with a non-slip mat, towel or sheet. Wear protective gloves, wash your bath or shower afterwards with hot water and washing-up liquid, then dry with a kitchen towel. Skin irritation from aqueous cream Emulsifying ointment has been found to have major sunscreen activities and should not be used before any form of light treatment (phototherapy) or phototesting. Other first line options are Epimax ®ointment and Liquid & white soft paraffin ointment (Fifty:50®).
