It isn’t enough for speakers to be versatile from a design perspective, they also need to offer a variety of connectivity options. Nowadays, even more high-end options focused solely on high-definition audio reproduction need to offer at least the ability to connect via Bluetooth to a smartphone. Each enclosure contains a 150W power supply, an XMOS xCore-200 multicore processor, a Texas Instruments TLV320AIC3268 digital signal processor (DSP), and a Texas Instruments TPA3251 class-D amplifier module that can deliver 120W to the midrange-woofer and 10W to the ribbon tweeter. Edifier does not specify crossover frequency or slope. The AirPulse A300 comes with a standard cardboard box and some foam inserts for protection. Inside, you get an accessories pizza-style box that includes everything you’ll need to get going.

The A300 uses a horn-loaded ribbon tweeter design, a totally above-average 6.5-inch low distortion mid/low aluminum cone driver, and a 65mm aluminum ribbon tweeter. Most loudspeakers use round copper wire in the voice coil but we use a far better single layer edge-wound copper clad aluminum ribbon. Ribbon voice-coil wire gives more electrical conductor in the magnet gap and increases efficiency, power handling and lowers distortion. Next we have a look at the crossover between the ribbon tweeter (blue) and woofer (green). I conducted this measurement by placing the microphone 1/2" from the the drivers and running through the sweep to find what range the driver is most active in. This measurement isn't as precise as the full spectrum sweep since there is always a bit of bleed between the two drivers no matter how close you place the mic. However, we can see that this point for the A300 is around 2 kHz.

Airpulse speakers

It's hard to give speakers an objective score and definitive recommendation, but thankfully Edifier offers a 30-day return policy if you don't like them, so you can give them a try if they're within your budget. So if you've had some nice speakers in the past and are looking to upgrade, you won't be disappointed with the AirPulse A300. The system reserves a sub woofer signal output in case of situation that needs low frequency rendering with strong bass. Volume of the subwoofer can be adjusted by the master volume control It is lovely to have them, of course. But I will not ever use them with Bluetooth sounding as good as it does now, especially not if the speaker has a dedicated DAC inside of it that directly plugs in via USB-B cable. All digital streams are resampled to 24/96 PCM by the XMOS processor in the primary speaker, and analog signals from the auxiliary inputs are converted to 24/96 PCM.

Sound quality is, of course, the metric by which speakers live and die, being their entire raison d’etre. And the Airpulse A80s come with a host of specifications and certifications that mean, on paper at least, they should achieve something close to remarkable.
