About this deal

And yes, I did feel that the story regarding Gracewood's sister and her coming out into society took more of a precedent to the actual romance of the story. When they arrive, Gracewood is depressed, drunk, and doesn’t realize he already knows Viola, so she agrees when Lady Marleigh suggests she try to help him get better. It shows courage and dedication to overcome all obstacles and leaves you all warm and fuzzy with an ending to make you smile from ear to ear.

I listened to the audiobook and while I normally love reading in that format, I was choosing to listen to music on my commute instead of the book because it was so boring. I'm not trans myself so do check out own voices reviewers to hear their thoughts but I was definitely a fan. It was sad because we see Gracewood suffer, but we know that his mental illness won’t even get a name during his lifetime. She joined the army with her dearest friend, Justin De Vere, the Duke of Gracewood, and after being presumed dead at Waterloo, took the opportunity to start to live honestly as herself. Any of the issues facing Viola and Justin would make a great novel, but placing them in nineteenth century England adds a unique twist.

And then a letter from Gracewood's sister alerts Viola to the reality that her death has left her best friend a broken shell of himself. I’m not a massive historical romance fan usually, so I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about that one, but since this had a trans protagonist and was by an author I love, I wanted to give it a go. Although Viola’s insistence in her womanhood in the face of confusion or questioning is more stalwart, it has echoes of d’Eon’s insistence at being born a woman. Despite the centering of Viola and Gracewood’s love story, this is a book that celebrates the many ways people love and are loved. There are times when he cannot be as strong as he would like, and even times when Viola has to support him and even fight for him. when you have known and loved a man from childhood on and meet him after 2 years of absence in female form, you think at least once how she resembles the lost friend. But more than 2 years have passed since that dreadful day on the battlefield in Waterloo, and Viola has accepted that she will never see Gracewood again. Viola works hard to bring life back to her best friend, but feelings she never had before surface for the Duke but she can’t help but feel nothing can ever come of it. In fact, after recovering from her wounds, she made the bold decision to walk away from her inheritance and her title and into a new life: She was finally free to live as a woman.
