About this deal

As a Tolkien linguist I was especially interested in seeing sketches of texts that shows Tolkien's use of his nexus of invented languages - such as in the brilliant drafts of The Ring Inscription and Tolkien's attempt (in the style of the new Romancer H Rider Haggard) of creating the distressed and bloodied pages of The Book of Mazarbul that the Fellowship finds in Moria (which sadly was not reproduced in the original volumes).

Greg and Tim Hildebrandt (also known as “The Brothers Hildebrandt”) have created many paintings relating to the world of Middle-earth. Myla would love nothing more than to be able to live peacefully in the Shire and go on the occasional adventure with Bilbo. Tolkien, with which the new book is uniform, will find much of interest also in The Art of The Lord of the Rings.Tolkien did many illustrations for The Hobbit, and whilst they’re not exactly masterpieces, they show how he pictured his world. He had a concept of the perfect ideal that he wanted to create; but he also felt the limitations of deadlines, money, publisher’s demands, his other jobs and family duties, and his own perceived limitations, particularly in the artwork.

Featuring extraordinary illustrations by Clive Hicks-Jenkins and an exclusive introduction by Janina Ramirez, each of the 750 numbered copies has been signed by both contributors. In short, they conclude, "Tolkien's art and his visual imagination should be considered an essential part of his writing and thinking. Tolkien, and has designed a wide variety of books, exhibition catalogues, posters, and other printed materials. Tolkien’s mental pictures often found expression in drawing, from rough sketches made within the manuscript to more finished illustrations.

Even more fascinating is how he created his inscriptions in runes and Elvish script, serving as further evidence of his infinite creativity in that domain. I liked how the armorers would come to the artists and say, look, you can draw this stuff, but you can't actually wear it in combat, the joints won't bend the right way, these spikes will poke the wearer.A lot of pages in the book are devoted to Tolkien’s map-making, which worked hand-in-hand with his writing of the prose.

Alan Lee and John Howe, amongst others, are represented here and provide great insight into the inner workings of both the art and its use within the production. The book presents more than 150 of Alan Lee's celebrated illustrations to show how his imagery for both the illustrated The Lord of the Rings and the films progressed from concept to finished art.

A former editor of Doctor Who Magazine, he also was the producer of Doctor Who audio dramas for Big Finish Productions for eight years.
