About this deal

In just a few years, the field of neuroscience has been transformed by exciting new technologies and an explosion of knowledge about the brain. I entered a Doctorate level Advanced Neuroscience class in 2013 without any previous history in Biology (beyond 1 semester of 7th grade Bio and high school Marine Biology -- oy! Bear was on the faculty of Brown University School of Medicine for 17 years where he held the Sidney and Dorothy Doctors Fox Chair in Visual Neuroscience. I was actually surprised and disappointed when the book suddenly ended with so many questions left unanswered -- but I guess that's how science goes.

The authors’ passion for the dynamic field of neuroscience is evident on every page, engaging students and helping them master the material.

Admittedly this would be very difficult to draw correctly, but then again, real anatomical dimorphism is less consistent than this, that's a valid excuse.

Great book for even introductory readers like me who is trying to understand what goes on between ears. In general terms, the concepts are explained extraordinarily well and in an arrangement that gradually builds an understanding of the underlying cellular mechanics so the reader (astoundingly) doesn't find themselves over their heads when later chapters paint the broader pictures of memory and learning. The authors' passion for the dynamic field of neuroscience is evident on every page, engaging students and helping them master the material. I felt the chapters on mental illness and affective neuroscience in general were frustratingly short but I suppose that's because I have an unusual fascination with those topics. Of Special Interest boxes provide interesting facts and topics that connect theory with real-life neuroscience applications. Herbert Ballou University Professor of Neuroscience and a Professor of Medical Science at Brown University and the Alpert Medical School. Otherwise the book was both a good textbook and an interesting helpful book to pass my neuroscience class. The book includes clear illustrations and diagrams (that is, as clear as diagrams of brain wiring or second messenger cascades can be). I recommend this for anyone who wants to see the very basic connections between neuronal function and behavior.
