For all the key decisions, we document and explain how it impacts the user experience and makes users’ journey easier. By demonstrating confidence in your design choices and backing them up with evidence, you can establish a compelling case for your ideas and inspire confidence in your clients. Anticipating the questions clients may ask and preparing answers to address their queries will help you explore your decisions further and articulate them better. Something that really stuck with me is the idea that as a designer you present and talk about your work in different ways with different people. While design expertise can help designers succeed in the first part, the second part requires more than just design prowess.
When you clearly articulate the problems that you are seeking to solve, you build context around why certain design decisions were taken. Based on my book Articulating Design Decisions, these online classes focus on principles, tactics, and actionable methods for helping you present design to other people.

How many times has someone come into a project half way through and asked questions that have already been answered, derailing the meeting and forcing you to ‘catch them up’ on the last three months of conversation in a one hour session? In his book “Articulating Design Decisions”, Tom Greever, design leader, author, and speaker, talks about the importance of clearly communicating and justifying design decisions to clients and team members. Additionally, developers can benefit from learning practical tips to improve communication with designers and stakeholders.
The creative problem-solving approach enhances the quality of the final design and gives the design team an upper hand over their competitors. With good communication and evidence to support our decisions, we turn challenging situations into opportune scenarios for emphasizing our expertise and building strong relationships with clients.
As a result, designers gain better clarity about the client's requirements and objectives of the design project. This means that you may have an incredibly innovative and problem-solving design, but you may not get the support you want or need because you can’t speak about the design or the reasoning behind it in an effective way. It’s our responsibilities as designers to recognise these insights and encourage forward trajectory — not get hung up on a particular idea or goal that’s since been abandoned.Articulating design decisions is a crucial soft skill for a designer to be effective and successful. I loved the examples he gives and the frameworks for better breaking down all the steps to having these complex conversations time and time again. It’s about creating trust, demonstrating effectiveness, and doing so in a way that’s compelling and convincing.
