The metallic and pearlescent shades are ideal for adding shimmer to your lettering, illustrations, comic characters and mixed media paintings. It doesn’t take up too much space on my desk or in my lap when I’m traveling, but if you wanted something more compact and easier to fit in your pocket or purse, I think the 24- count is the way to go. The pans and/or cubes of paint will also fall out if you bend over while holding open, or accidentally tipped it.

For the purposes of this painting I put together several different photos of koi fish and positioned them to create an interesting composition. Included is a large refillable water brush with a 9ml reservoir, a sponge, and a detachable palette. After laying dormant for a couple of weeks, I decided to break it out and start practicing with watercolors. Unfortunatly because of this compact space there really isn't any room for when you wipe your brush over one colour you have to stop halfway otherwise you'll go straight onto the next [this isn't a problem if you want two tone and the blocks are easy to clean. It is worth baring in mind that the paints will stain the fibres so clean them as best you can, don't be too vigorous and don't worry about splaying the hairs - so long as you have hold of the end and don't bend any of the hairs they can be easily re-pointed when your finished.

Now bare in mind, this is important, do NOT let ANYTHING damage/break/split/bend the sealed end of the fibres! My plan is to alternate between artist grade, and other more affordable paints, and paints people might want to use for sketching or journal keeping. To make holding more convenient, there’s a little pull-down ring at the bottom of the sketchbox that you can slide over your finger. p>A large 9ml size water reservoir barrel

If we left all the analysis at this point, you would say, “Well for heaven’s sake, why would anyone bother getting the Winsor and Newton over the Sakura if there’s only a tiny difference? Compact travel tin with watercolour paint, with 12 assorted colours, a compact Koi Water Brush, and sponge. They mention that it's great for travelling, the water brush is good quality and that it can be attached to the side of the palettes. And what you'll have is the fibre brush, the black cage supporting it and sponge ring and the black cap with the stalk. Like I said, I’m new to watercolors, so I don’t have much experience in what paint is “good” or not.

The water brush must be dissembled to fit back into place but it has a small stopper so you can leave it loaded with water for travel. From what I’ve read online as well as some of my personal experience, Koi watercolors seem to be geared more towards the amateur to mid-level watercolor artist. The Sakura site contains no info on this, but I’ve read on some blogs that there are lightfastness and/or fugitive pigment issues. there are 'teeth' that stop it from sliding down, carefully lift it abit at a time over them] this ring is what helps control the water flow down the fibres.

So using the reference as a guide I started laying down some fairly diluted gray shapes on each of the three orange fish.One downside is it's difficult to differentiate the cool from warm grays based on the colours of the caps. They are waterbased and they blend quite well together and you can easily create a flat wash with no streaking lines. When you compare to Copic markers, when you over lay the markers even by the tiniest bit, you will see the tones get darker. Complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel and they tend to create a lively, dynamic appearance. Koi’s rich colour assortment offers the choice to create bold hues or soft and subtle shades with the addition of pearlescent, metallic and fluorescent watercolours.
