About this deal

And the thing was, she'd been meaning to talk to the occupant of that boat, the young man, about overstaying. It was a bright morning, cold for March, though white buds on glossy new branches of plane and birch hinted at spring.

She dropped the bra on the floor too, clambered into the bathtub, and turned on the shower, then stood shivering under the paltry trickle of scalding water (her shower offered a choice of very hot or very cold, nothing in between). It was the pacing and the large cast of unlikable and unreliable narrators that bogged this one down for me a bit. Additionally, there is an old lady Irene who is Angela's neighbor and friend and who is now supported for her grocery purchases by Laura. Not something Laura expected to say or even think, but standing there in her bathroom, shaking uncontrollably, blood pulsing hot and steady from the cut to her arm, she had to admit that imaginary Deidre was bang on the money.

I just put it down to the mental instability of the murderer and all the supporting cast members in this long, drawn out drama. There are quite a few characters to keep track of and how they are related and connected to each other. Underneath the blood, all that blood, there was something else, something older, sweet and rank, like lilies left too long in the vase. From the beginning of the novel, I expected something big, earth shattering, surprising will happen or something so smart will come out to fool me but none of them happened. She realized he was trying to figure her out, that he wasn't taking her at her word, that he didn't necessarily believe what she was telling him. Almost all the characters were damaged but not very likeable and unfortunately I just didn’t engage with any of them. I wouldn't say I read an awful lot but I do know that if I had to pick a favourite author at the moment I would say Paula Hawkins. Published in over fifty languages, it has been a Number 1 bestseller around the world and was a box office hit film starring Emily Blunt.

One highlight is that the audio version I listened to was impeccably narrated by the brilliant actress Rosumund Pike. bestseller, spending twenty weeks in the Sunday Times hardback fiction Top 10 bestseller list, and six weeks at No. After a young man is found murdered in a houseboat in London, it brings to the forefront three women who have unique and complicated connections to him. In particular, Pike captures the melancholy of the widowed Irene, whose frail appearance and occasional mishaps prompt others to condescend and patronise rather than treat her as a sentient adult.A nosy neighbor, a one-night stand, and a resentful family member, all who are juggling their own secrets and hidden agendas. Daniel is Carol’s nephew, and they are grieving the loss of their three-year-old son, Ben, fifteen years ago. International bestselling author Paula Hawkins may always be best-known for her record-shattering debut, The Girl on the Train. Hawkins, who finally came through and published her third novel after a three-year hiatus, proved why I found her debut so compulsively readable - this was very similar, and in my opinion just as good! This was my third Paula Hawkins book and while I found it somewhat slow going, the writing was superb.
