About this deal

It was the last conventional military campaign of the 20th century in which British troops in defence of UK territory, against one of the world’s bloodiest dictatorships. But still the Middlebrook touch is undeniable and if you only want to read one book on the conflict, you are well served by this volume.

Gamerro's novel is not straightforwardly realist: as if the role of the Falklands/Malvinas is too bizarre to be captured by anything but a fantastical, surrealist, genre-bending style. And then suddenly we lost the war, quite surprisingly since we had been winning it until that very moment. In total, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders died during the hostilities. An interesting account of NP 8901 who did so much at the start, and were there to finish the job off at the end. The last word surely has to go to Simon Weston - don't bother with his more recent day-by-day account of the war, but read Walking Tall.

In conveying the experiences of the conscripted Argentinian troops, he said: "What they went through was so bizarre and incredible I didn't think any fantasy was needed. If this is the first time you use this feature, you will be asked to authorise Cambridge Core to connect with your account. Generally, this book does a good job of informing the professional and amateur war historians as to the particulars of the war.Eminently readable (I finished it in two sittings) and compelling, Bramley’s story resonated with a number of former servicemen who fought in the Falklands War and was later complimented by similar books from James O’Connell (3 Para) and Tony Banks (2 Para) in their own personal accounts. Few, if any, of the public knew that informed military opinion in the United States regarded the Falklands operation as "Mission Impossible". The average age of the 199 men on board the HMS Ardent was 23 in May 1982 when she made a midnight run into Falkland Sound, ahead of the British amphibious group.
