But one thing that helped this year’s calendar is the inclusion of so many printed pieces unique to this calendar. The Harry Potter Advent Calendar is a spellbinding gift for Harry Potter fans of all ages, from 14 to adult. The accompanying mini builds are a nice assortment of Christmas requisites like trees and snowmen alongside some suitably magical items, including chocolate frog displays and a cask of butter beer.
You can get in to the calendar to see the pieces if you’re impatient and want to look at the mini sets before you start opening the doors in December – the end of the box is held shut with tape rather than being one of the Lego boxes that you have to rip in to to open, so the contents can be accessed without outright destruction. It’s as basic as it goes, literally just a pile of pearl gold 1 x 1 studs, and some pearl gold bars. With LEGO going hard into the Harry Potter theme, it’s puzzling that they would not invest in a Galleon tile, which would make so much sense as it’s the most valuable denomination of wizard currency. It’s a really strong theme and allows a lot of storytelling to be put into each build – something that has been missing from previous years. Rather, it seems to be about micro-scale models – like a photo-album with pictures from the various movies.I guess this places Harry before he boards the Hogwarts Express, and he hasn’t caught the train yet!
