About this deal

Boil 1 litre of fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes. Measure the required amount of water (see feeding guide) into a sterilised bottle, carefully - the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. Infant formulae are suitable from birth when babies are not breastfed and should only be used on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, or other professionals responsible for maternal and child care. SMA® Soya milk-free formula is intended to meet the nutritional needs of babies and children who are intolerant to cows' milk protein, lactose or sucrose. SMA® Soya is not recommended for preterm babies, those with kidney problems, or those with suspected or confirmed soya allergy, where medical guidance should always be sought. COT. 2013. Statement on the potential risks from high levels of soya phytoestrogens in the infant diet. Soya formula is made from soya beans, not cows' milk. It's occasionally used as an alternative to cows' milk formula for babies who have cows' milk allergy. This table is a guide only; your baby may need more or less than the volumes stated. If you require more advice, consult healthcare professional. Remember to feed your baby on demand. Mix 1 scoop of powder to 30 ml (approx. 1 fl. oz.) of water. Much of the work that has raised concerns about soya involved the use of animals and isolation of particular isoflavones from the soya bean itself. There are two major arguments why such research is not relevant to humans. Firstly, using animals as models for humans is very unreliable because results that show up in animals may not – and in the case of soya they do not – translate to humans. Secondly, eating soya or feeding it as a formula feed to babies is not the same as isolating and force-feeding or injecting compounds from it into animals. The human body deactivates a large portion of the compounds that are eaten, converts them to another form or doesn’t even absorb them (Testa et al., 2018). Hungrier baby formula (hungry milk) is suitable from birth, but ask a midwife or health visitor for advice first.

Safe alternatives to cow’s milk-based infant formulas

When your baby is 1 year old, they can start to drink whole cows' milk or sheep's or goats' milk (as long as these milks are pasteurised). There's no evidence that switching to a different formula does any good or harm. However, if you think a particular brand of formula disagrees with your baby, talk to a midwife or health visitor. They can help you decide whether to try a different type. The Nestlé Health Science Sample Service is available to healthcare professionals only, who require sample products for professional evaluation when they have no sample product or if a patient has insufficient product to cover their needs. This service is not intended as a long term solution for a patient. SMA recommend that breastfeeding is best for babies. They advise that you should always seek the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietician or pharmacist on the need for and proper method of use of infant formula and on all matters of infant feeding.

Two recent studies also focused on finding out whether soya-based formulas can affect reproductive development, hormone levels and the onset of puberty. The first studied boys who were fed soya-formula and analysed their hormone levels and development of reproductive organs (Chin et al., 2021). The Approx. Age of Baby: Birth - 4 - 8 weeks; Approx. However, sensationalist articles in the media falsely claiming that soya and soya-based formula may affect hormone levels and childhood development have caused unnecessary concern to some parents. Comfort formula is made from partly broken down (partially hydrolysed) proteins. It's not suitable for babies with cows' milk allergy. Follow-on formula Protein is vitally important for a baby’s growth. Therefore, if a baby is intolerant to cows’ milk, an alternative must be found.

For vegan parents and those whose babies have cow’s milk allergies, plant-based infant formulas are suitable substitutes for breastmilk. Hydrolyzed rice protein-based formulas, a vegetal alternative in cow’s milk allergy. Nutrients. 12 (9) 2654. Some babies are allergic or intolerant to both cow’s milk and soya, so rice formulas were developed to suit their needs.
