About this deal

Use solvent. A solvent is a liquid that is applied to thin the colored pencil medium. You should always test your solvent on the paper and medium before applying it to your piece. It’s more commonly and effectively used with oil-colored pencils. Next, I drew the separated pencils onto separate colour wheels. I completed five colour wheels. These were oil-based, wax-based, lightfast and non-lightfast colour wheels. The ease with which an oil-based pencil dispenses color and cover means that it does not require multiple rounds of layering or a fixative substance. That being said, the ease with which it dispenses color also means that one stroke dispenses a lot of that color, making them far less durable than a wax-based colored pencil. By comparing the colour wheels above, drawing a violet pink lily would be best done with the non-lightfast pencils – oil or wax. The final image should be used for prints rather than sold.

The key difference appears to be in the infusion process of the colored pencil lead itself. Once the lead is created and dried it is soaked and allowed to marinate for a given period of time until the lead is infused with a mixture of wax and oil all the way to the center of the core. It is then tested, dried, and glued into the barrel. Wax-based colored pencils, as the name suggests, have a core made up of a colored pigment, binding agents, and wax. This composition makes them a popular choice among artists, particularly for their smooth application and vivid color palette. They offer smooth coverage and excellent lightfastness, which helps maintain the vibrancy of the artwork over time. Moreover, these pencils don't produce a wax bloom, unlike some wax-based colored pencils.

7. Where to find a good deal on oil colored pencils and colored pencil sets (online retailers)

While colored pencils can provide rich, saturated colors, pastel pencils often offer even greater color intensity due to the high proportion of pigment. This might seem a bit insignificant for some, but it is worth considering if the oil-based colored pencils come in a storage tin or container, rather than a cardboard box that might break. As these oil-based pencils are likely premium-grade, you want to keep them protected from damage. Whether you're a beginner or a professional, these artist-grade pencils will help you create beautiful works of art. What You Should Know

To make the pencils long-lasting, the leads are SV bonded, so the pencils last for longer than many other colored pencils. To demonstrate the differences between the pencils, let’s look at some drawings that I completed in an online course, “Coloured Pencil Textures” with Kate Clarke. In carrying out this exercise, I found that the wax-based pencils blended well with a wax-core blending pencil. They're also soft and easy to use, making them great gifts for all skill levels. Best of all, they're quite versatile, perfect for drawing, sketching, illustration, coloring books, and so much more! Over time, wax-based colored pencils used on paper can develop a wax bloom, which is a light waxy film that develops over the surface of the drawing. This can be wiped away with a damp cloth but is not ideal if you do not want to interfere with your framed artwork.

The pencils have a smooth, creamy texture that makes them a pleasure to use, and they blend easily to create even more color possibilities.Generally, the more pigment the better the lightfast rating. This means that the colors will hold up better through time from the elements especially when it comes to UV rays. Traditional colored pencils, on the other hand, offer a more consistent color intensity, but with the ability to layer and blend for varied effects.
