About this deal

As a book prequel to one of the films, I would rank Labyrinth of Evil up there with Cloak of Deception where I feel like it's not essential for your understanding of the film but it fleshes a lot of elements out. I enjoyed it more than The Approaching Storm by Alan Dean Foster, because that one didn’t seem to add as much to my understanding of Episode II as Luceno's two novels did for Episodes I and III. On the downside, though, there’s a ton of political stuff in Cloak of Deception (your mileage may vary; mine certainly did), and in Labyrinth of Evil it felt at times like Anakin and Obi-Wan were on a wild goose chase. They uncover things at each new destination, but Sidious wants them away from Coruscant so that he can sneak Grievous in. I suspect Lucas originally intended Episode III to mark Obi-Wan’s first meeting with Grievous as well, but since the dialog doesn’t strictly preclude previous meetings, they do indeed meet in “The Clone Wars.”

Xanatos Speed Chess: Despite his risk of exposure, Sidious not only manages to stay one step ahead of the Jedi but use their search to accelerate his own endgame. Anakin and Obi-Wan race closer and closer to the true identity of Darth Sidious as the events tumble into what was made into the movie, Revenge of the Sith. We learn that Obi-Wan has been made a member of the Jedi Council, which is an amazing accomplishment for a man not yet in his forties! Anakin has been Knighted after the events on Praesitlyn, he’s lost a lot of his boyish humor, and he’s very unhappy with some of the choices the Jedi have made (foreshadowing for Episode III). Capturing Trade Federation Viceroy–and Separatist Councilmember– Nute Gunray is the mission that brings Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, with a squad of clones in tow, to Neimoidia. But the treacherous ally of the Sith proves as slippery as ever, evading his Jedi pursuers even as they narrowly avoid deadly disaster. Still, their daring efforts yield an unexpected prize: a unique holotransceiver that bears intelligence capable of leading the Republic forces to their ultimate quarry, the ever-elusive Darth Sidious.Capturing Trade Federation Viceroy—and Separatist Councilmember— Nute Gunray is the mission that brings Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, with a squad of clones in tow, to Neimoidia. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker embark on their last big mission together before the events of Episode III. It is the Chosen One’s first assignment with Obi-Wan as a full-fledged Jedi Knight. The Clone Wars are nearing their climactic resolution, with the Jedi investigating tenuous leads as to the location of Darth Sidious, the long-rumored mastermind behind the dark events clouding the galaxy. But such a search leads deep into a web of lies, and an explosive adventure that sets the stage for Episode III. It’s true that some things can’t be reconciled. For instance, both “Labyrinth” and the third season of the “Clone Wars” microseries chronicle the sequence of events leading to Grievous’ kidnapping of Palpatine, but there are differences in the details. This is because the TV episodes, which came out in March, were based on an early draft of “Labyrinth.”

By stripping away extraneous tangents and bolstering attention to character development, this edit seeks to improve the original film. The original trilogy is regarded as the template toward which the prequels strive. The prequels are made to submit to the continuity and drive of the originals to the degree possible. Consolation Prize: While Anakin and Obi-Wan fail to capture Gunray, they get proof of Sidious's existence. Anakin and Palpatine don’t mention Padme during the knighting of Vader scene. Other dialogue is trimmed a little for effectiveness. The idea is that saving Padme’s life is the spark that ignites a myriad of other factors for Anakin’s turn toward evil. The third of the revamped ‘9000 Series,’ Labyrinth Of Evil delivers a re-crafted perspective on Star Wars Episode III in keeping with the drive of the original trilogy of films. Anakin’s fall to the dark side is portrayed in a more believable way, with political motivations that are ignited by, rather than preceded by, a desire to save his wife. Padme’s role is expanded, and her fate is made to match her daughter’s memories. On Tythe, Dooku sends battle droids to delay Anakin and Obi-Wan from reaching him, but his plans go awry when an angered Skywalker loses control of himself. In a surge of rage and power, Anakin releases a powerful wave of Force energy that collapsed the vast hall of the building, burying himself, Obi-Wan and Dooku beneath tons of debris.Mace and Yoda decide that no matter what Darth Sidious must be rooted out. Grievous meets with Gunray and chastises him for the loss of the mechno-chair. On Kaon Count Dooku reflects on Grievous, his turn to the Sith, and his apprenticeship and service to Darth Sidious. Mace and Yoda meet with Palpatine to discuss the events at Belderone as well as what they have uncovered from the mechno-chair. Palpatine tells them to do whatever they must to hunt Sidious down. Though no changes have been made for V6 to the contents of the scene between Padme and Obi-Wan, the audio has been reworked to avoid breaking up the musical score, allowing it to play out in a more aesthetically pleasing way. On the planet Cato Neimoidia, Jedi generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker lead clone troopers to capture Nute Gunray, Trade Federation viceroy and one of the leaders of the Separatists. Gunray narrowly escapes to rendezvous with General Grievous and the rest of the Separatist Council, but he leaves behind his walking chair equipped with a specially-constructed holotransceiver. Republic analysts find the afterimage of Darth Sidious, the Sith Lord who masterminded the Clone Wars. However, this puts the Jedi no closer to finding Sidious himself. Improve the prequels in and of themselves, as films, through conventional ‘FanFix’ methodology. The pacing is improved, dialogue trimmed, and characters are developed better. This is the most readily apparent of these three goals that can be seen in The Phantom Edit, for example. The edits should be viable as a b Bailey, Caleb (December 31, 2019). A Star Wars Legends novel by James Luceno, Labyrinth of Evil is the story of how the Jedi almost caught Darth Sidious in the months leading up to Revenge of the Sith. What I didn't like: Really, my only complaint isn't necessary a complaint. The challenge with any movie tie-in is pacing. At times, I found myself getting bogged down with the progression of the plot, and it wasn't until the end of the book that I realized what the plot actually was. This may be due to my attention span more than anything on the authors part, but it did make some parts feel clunky. Anakin is depicted as being in his right mind up until he formally joins the dark side. The scene where he seems to have paranoia about Obi-Wan being as Padme's apartment is gone. I guess we can interpret his crazed psyche at the end of the film as being caused by using the dark side. Your guess is as good as mine, but it's better than having his personality fluctuate throughout the film. Sounds like this won’t be too much of a concern. Here’s what the author of Brotherhood had to say on the subject: When he reaches the force though he finds that the enemies have been destroyed, with a "dislocated" Kenobi having defeated over fifty alone with his "new lightsaber form" as Anakin jokingly refers to it. After Kenobi recovers they learn that the commandos inspecting the items left behind by Gunray have discovered something that may be of interest.

Big Fancy Castle: Nute Gunray's fortress on Cato Neimoidia gives off this vibe. Besides being huge, opulent, and full of rare treasures (the reason Gunray returned to his homeworld in the first place), it sits on top of an enormous warren where fungi are grown, both as food for larval Neimoidians and as a valuable export. Padme mostly wishes that Anakin would return from the Outer Rim, because she hasn’t seen him in months. We don’t get any outright confirmation of her pregnancy, but we do get hints that she’s concealing something related to her health—especially after she faints during the Battle of Coruscant. Creating fan edits of novels seems like a really good idea to me! This way, we can not only create Canon versions of the Legends books, but also Legends versions of the Canon books. Also, we can take the Legends books that have TCW references in them and remove these references, so that these books can fit with the pre-Filoni and pre-TCW lore. For example, we can take the Darth Plagueis novel and modify it, eliminating all references to the TCW lore (Darth Maul born on Dathomir, etc). Corrected two inaccurate lightsaber ignition sounds during the opening sequence. Obi-Wan and Anakin's sabers must match their ANH and ESB sounds.

Removed Obi-Wan sneaking into the bathroom on Padme’s ship. If you missed him during the wide shot, it’ll be a surprise when he shows up later. Removed most asinine dialogue as Padme arrives and confronts Anakin, including “I saw your ship.” No reference to younglings. Tension ratchets between the two as Anakin finds out Padme told Obi-Wan about their relationship. No discussion about Anakin trying to save Padme; she never knew about Anakin’s fears about that. Anakin doesn’t seem focused on it himself anymore. Luceno said when writing a Star Wars novel that connects with a film, he begins by "asking myself when and where the full story began", then imagining younger versions of the characters from the films. [3] In the earliest outlines, the book was to build upon the opening crawl of Revenge of the Sith, particularly by depicting the off-screen kidnapping of Chancellor Palpatine. [6] The starting point for Labyrinth of Evil was a line of dialogue from Revenge of the Sith in which Obi-Wan Kenobi briefly mentions to Anakin Skywalker "that business on Cato Neimoidia", an event from their past which is not further elaborated upon in the film. [3] [7] Luceno called that line "the springboard for exploring Obi-Wan and Anakin's friendship". [3] Labyrinth of Evil was originally planned to include the death of Asajj Ventress, an antagonist from other Star Wars works whose story arc had remained unresolved by that point, but it was ultimately excluded from the final novel. This book covers the events during the Clone Wars and is situated between Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Vitriolic Best Buds: Obi-Wan and Anakin, now that Anakin has graduated to Knighthood and they act as partners in the Clone Wars instead of master and student. Chewbacca’s onscreen appearances have been altered to either remove him or disguise him by recoloring his fur and adding alternate clothing. (Thanks to Poppasketti) Arc Welding: Luceno ties together multiple elements from the Clone Wars stories and earlier in the Prequel era, as the Jedi realize just how extensive Sidious's machinations are.
