To distill this plot into its individual beats you could be excused for dismissing it as a juicy telenovela but there is so much here at its heart. There is the struggle against loneliness, bigotry, prejudice and our past mistakes while forging a path forward against it all. The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. Betty Ramdin's husband, Sunil, is abusive towards her and Betty does her best to protect their young son, Solo. After an accident leaves Sunil dead, Betty takes in a boarder named Mr. Chetan. Over time, Mr. Chetan develops a bond with both mother and son. But Solo discovers Betty's long-held secret, and from that moment things are going to be different for these three characters. Where do they go from here? Which it duly did! Not quite as early on as I thought, admittedly, though I guess it’s a hard one to balance. You want to have your readers believe in the relationship between Ash and Poppy, which means you need to develop it. But the crux of the story is in Ash’s death and her subsequent desire to see Poppy again one last time.

The first part of the novel is about how Ash and Poppy get to know each other and fall in love. We learn about her best friend and her little sister and their lives as brown girls living in Brighton. Betty Ramdin was only twenty years old when she met married her husband Sunil. The marriage was Betty’s way to get some form of freedom, live in and run her own house. The marriage started off great but soon evolved into a toxic relationship Betty could not leave. A few years into the marriage Betty has Solo, her one son who she dotes and maybe spoils a lot. When things in the marriage gets rough, Betty’s only focus is protecting her son from Sunil. On the night of Solo’s birthday, Betty’s husband died from falling down the stairs. At age forty Betty is now on her own raising her son and looking after a house that is entirely too much for her.

Then the lovely man they took in. The family grew only with a hidden secret from him which lead him into some very dark corners. Life in America is not easy for Solo. As he approaches the expiry of his 6-month visa he has to decide what to do. Life as an undocumented migrant will be even more difficult, but the alternative - returning to Trinidad, and to his mother - is simply not an option with the schism that has come between them. I've been looking forward to reading this novel all year, but I didn't expect it to warm my heart quite as much as it did. A wonderful literary antidote to all the negativity 2020 has spread everywhere. Although the ending had me choke-sobbing, I am left with an overall lasting impression of joy.

I did not like how the book was narrated and I struggled to connect with the characters. However the plot started to lose its way in the middle to end for me and became reliant on a lot of problematic tropes to tell the story. And the teacher told me Solo’s best in the class. stars. Cute and bittersweet. I had no idea what to expect from this book and even without expectations I still had the feeling that this was not what I expected. The YA and paranormal aspects drew me in, but it was heavier than I thought, which, unfortunately, did take away some of my enjoyment of the book even though I thought it was written very well.

But, the inevitable must come. Ash must die and our minds must fill with questions about what it means for her and Poppy, how Ash’s family coped, what everyone is doing now. Only some of those questions get answered, which is a little disappointing given how much I grew to love the other side characters. Nevertheless, the second section of Afterlove brings in the fantasy element of reapers, who collect souls of the recently deceased and bring them to Charon’s boat to continue their journey. Education is also free and compulsory between ages 5 and 16 up until university. It is also considered one of the most educated countries in the world with a literacy rate exceeding 98% -- The first thing I noticed about this book was how brilliant the writing was. It’s that kind of writing that can rip you apart with only a few words, so obviously I was predisposed to love it. And that writing made it very easy just to slip into the story and wait for it to break my heart.

But that didn’t affect my liking of the story so much, thankfully. I was still fully invested throughout and desperately hoping that the foretold ending would actually somehow be subverted. the romance between ash and poppy was so nice to read about !! it had a very insta love vibe but that is OK because it felt accurate to teenagers and it never felt THAT rushed it flowed quite nicely ?? If you have read teen romance or contemporary novels before, you will probably find yourself, like me, predicting most of the plot. But the sweet and beautiful romance is so worth the journey that it’s almost nice not to have any nasty surprises along the way. Byrne’s writing is flowery and perhaps a little excessive for some, yet I only found that it spoke to me, and reminded me of the way I enjoy writing: lots of dramatic metaphors and romanticism.

Like? The first half of the book had me hooked and I was straight (not really) up sobbing with some of the passages about Ash and Poppy’s relationship. It was twee, adorable— and then the grim reaper plot just kind of. Happened. That’s the only way I can describe how it unfolded. It just happened. this was a really really lovely and emotional read!! it had such a clear sense of setting and character and it made it so easy to fall into this story and family and dynamics
