As things stand, this group of 3.2 million people – enough to tip the balance in Starmer’s favour on their own – are talking about voting Labour but their allegiance is soft.
The Israel-Hamas war has added a further complication to Starmer’s ability to keep these voters on board, as they are troubled by his stance on the conflict and his refusal to call for a ceasefire, and many will have attended pro-Palestine marches in recent weeks.
Will of the People’ reignites the spirit and energy of Muse’s former incarnations. ‘Kill or Be Killed’, for example, transports us to those early 2000s days when guitar-oriented brutality was central currency. Then there’s the swerving EDM synth of ‘Compliance’, which brings to mind 2009’s sonic scope-widening ‘The Resistance’. Most delicious of all is the heartbroken simplicity of ‘Ghosts (How Can I Move On)’, the musical equivalent of a faded photograph from the days when the 21 year-old Matt Bellamy channelled small-town yearning into 1999 debut ‘Showbiz’ – complete with a ‘Sunburn’-recalling piano part. The lyrics are occasionally gritty, influenced On Parachute he sings how a dysfunctional parachute is sending him crashing into the ocean, where he will drown his emotions. The "Parkour" one showed the rioter running and jumping over buildings, as seen during the music video's first part, and is played before Time Is Running Out. The "Driving" interstitial showed the vehicles from the music video being driven through the desert, and was played before Plug In Baby.
