About this deal

An officer of one side acting as if he is a likely defector – drinking, complaining about his job - in the hope of attracting a recruitment offer from an enemy intelligence officer, with the object of becoming a double agent. Anderton, Ethan (17 September 2010). "Mark Strong Lands a Role in 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' ". FirstShowing . Retrieved 26 September 2011.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John LeCarre is an exciting story about a mole who moves up to the highest levels of the British intelligence community. Based on the information he provided, the covers of some of the best agents were blown. They know he is there, but they don't know who or where and they have to find him. The safety and existence of the British intelligence community depends on it. How do they do it? Naturally, a huge theme in this novel is that of betrayal. George Smiley grapples with this not only in his professional life but also his private life. His sincere interior conflict further illuminates the real character of the man. I can’t help but feel sympathy for Smiley, and admire his courage to examine his own principles. Look... we're getting to be old men, and we've spent our lives looking for the weaknesses in one another's systems. I can see through Eastern values just as you can see through our Western ones. ... Don't you think it's time to recognise that there is as little worth on your side as there is on mine?”

Pre-order:

The thing about Guinness's performance – again, for me– is that his Smiley is obviously a soulful person, and a competent person, and that sensation is just not the seeming cipher who triumphs – terrifically ambiguously – in the books." The novel's name for SIS (Secret Intelligence Service), MI6, which collects foreign intelligence. "Circus" refers to the (fictional) location of its headquarters in Cambridge Circus, London.

I see I've missed the novel/film/TV series comparison blog, but for what it's worth I thought all three were equally enjoyable … The TV series exploited that medium's strength for characterisation and dramatic exposition, compressed the plot without losing the essentials and had a stellar cast … The film I found equally well cast, with stunning design and a very effective use of recurring motifs, particularly as the "document lift" at the Circus being echoed by various other chambers throughout … A highly effective shorthand in communicating the claustrophobia of the lives of all concerned.

a b c Stafford, David (2012). The Silent Game: The Real World of Imaginary Spies. University of Georgia Press. p.206. UPDATE 1-18-18 ... For espionage thrillers, this is as good as it gets. The setting is the Cold War, and both the Britain and Russia are tired but still engaging in lethal combat by spy. One central theme that I did not appreciate before this re-read is that the primary conflict, even when Le Carre tells the story from a British POV, is not between British spies and the Russians, but between Russia and America, with British spies taking sides, not always as expected. The conflict between personal and patriotic motives plays out dramatically in each of the major characters. In July 2016, Oldman said that a sequel was in its early stages, stating, "There is a script, but I don't know when we will shoot." [50] It was reported at the time that a script based on Smiley's People had been " greenlit" by Working Title Films. [50] Karla’s pulled the Circus inside out; that much I understand, so do you. But there’s a last clever knot, and I can’t undo it. Though I mean to." I had read The Spy Who Came In From the Cold on my honeymoon in Paris, and I remember liking it, but not rushing out to get more Le Carre. Well, now I'm going to rush out to get more Le Carre.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ( French: La Taupe, lit.'The Mole') is a 2011 British Cold War spy thriller film directed by Tomas Alfredson. The screenplay was written by Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan, based on John le Carré's 1974 novel of the same name. The film stars Gary Oldman as George Smiley, with Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Toby Jones, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciarán Hinds, David Dencik and Kathy Burke supporting. It is set in London in the early 1970s and follows the hunt for a Soviet double agent at the top of the British secret service. John le Carré, whose real name was David Cornwell, worked as an intelligence officer for MI5 and MI6 (SIS) in the 1950s and early 1960s. [7] Senior SIS officer Kim Philby's defection to the USSR in 1963, and the consequent compromising of British agents, was a factor in the 1964 termination of Cornwell's intelligence career. [8] [9] Le Carré also drew from the paranoid atmosphere created by CIA counterintelligence chief James Jesus Angleton, who after Philby's defection became convinced that there were other moles operating at the highest levels of Western intelligence agencies. [10] Read the book then watch the movie and if you want more watch the mini-series. If you are like me it might take all three just to feel like you have found every gem, and every clue that Le Carre so liberally sprinkled through this historical work of fiction. There are two more books in the Karla series... The Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley's People. I for one plan to follow Smiley every step of the way.a b c Corera, Gordon (11 September 2011). Most of Cornwell's novels are spy stories set during the Cold War (1945–91) and feature Circus agents as unheroic political functionaries aware of the moral ambiguity of their work and engaged in psychological more than physical drama.[21] Cornwell's books emphasise the fallibility of Western democracy and of the secret services protecting it, often implying the possibility of East-West moral equivalence.[21] Moreover, they experience little of the violence typically encountered in action thrillers and have very little recourse to gadgets. Much of the conflict is internal, rather than external and visible. It took a few chapters for me to begin understanding the story. I appreciated the showing instead of telling, gathering character profiles Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a 1974 spy novel by British-Irish author John le Carré. It follows the endeavours of taciturn, aging spymaster George Smiley to uncover a Soviet mole in the British Secret Intelligence Service. The novel has received critical acclaim for its complex social commentary—and, at the time, relevance, following the defection of Kim Philby. It has been adapted into both a television series and a film, and remains a staple of the spy fiction genre. [2] [3] In fact, Nilpferd didn't miss the novel/film/TV series blog. This is it. And s/he's got it off to an excellent start. That's an entirely reasonable and well-balanced position to take on the subject – which makes it all the more fun to disagree. I didn't dislike the film, but it seemed the weakest of the three to me. All those carefully rendered 70s browns were too studied, the silences too significant. It wasn't a bad film. It just wasn't quite good enough. As TimHannigan wrote:

The thing about betrayal is that you're generally aware that it's happening before you know how, or why, or who. Things used to be good, and now they're not, and you know that even if you do figure out what's happened you'll never be able to put it right. At best, you'll be able to cut your losses, and move on. In TTSS, the main character, George Smiley, is being betrayed in two different ways. First, it's gradually become clear that there is a mole in his department. It can only be someone at the very highest level. One of his most trusted colleagues, someone he has worked with for years, and shared things with, and treated as a friend, is actually working for the Russians. They have it narrowed down to four people. He has to find out which one it is, and do what's necessary. And, at the same time, he's also realized that his wife is sleeping around. He can't really prove anything, and they never talk about it. But he knows that too.
