This car may have been the first car made for the production of the film and if it was the car would have most likely used for additional scenes during early production. The car was used heavily for preproduction publicity shots.

Films and television shows often feature vehicles, most of which will be displaying a license plate, however some of these have some special significance, or become icons in their own right due to the cult status of the film or show. Let’s take a look at some… a b c d "Where was 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' filmed?". British Film Locations. Archived from the original on 6 July 2018 . Retrieved 5 July 2018. In December 1965, it was reported that Earl Hamner had completed a script based upon the novel. [12] The following July, it was announced the film would be produced by Broccoli, without Harry Saltzman, who was his producing partner on the James Bond films. [13] By April 1967, Ken Hughes was set to direct the film from a screenplay by Roald Dahl, [14] and Hughes claimed he subsequently rewrote Dahl's script. [9] Six versions of the car were built for the film and several replicas have subsequently been produced. The version built for the stage production holds the record for the most expensive stage prop ever used. One car was built with wings and fiberglass pieces and filmed for flying scenes. The leading edges of the wings house folding propellers. This car was used for publicity stills to promote the film upon its release in 1968 and features prominently in posters.United Artists promoted the film with an expensive, extensive advertising campaign, hoping to reproduce the success of The Sound of Music (1965), and it was initially released on a roadshow basis. [4] Reception [ edit ] Original release [ edit ] Stirling, Richard (2009). Julie Andrews: An Intimate Biography. New York: St. Martin's Press. ISBN 9780312380250. In the story, the nasty Baron Bomburst, tyrant of the fictional land of Vulgaria, attempts to steal Chitty. The family escape thanks to Chitty's miraculous transformation into a boat, and Truly goes home to Scrumptious Manor (" Lovely Lonely Man"). The Baron sends two bungling spies to get the car, but they fail repeatedly and eventually decide to kidnap Caractacus instead, but mistake Grandpa for Caractacus. As they fly away in their airship (" Posh!"), Chitty sprouts wings and propellers, and the family pursues the airship all the way to Vulgaria. when Lord Scrumptious is driving behind and trying to get past Chitty, just before the railway bridge - this was actually the first scene shot for the film

Ritchie, Gayle (20 April 2019). "Take a trip down motoring memory lane at Dundee Museum of Transport". The courier . Retrieved 11 November 2022. According to Fleming, the original Chitty Bang-Bang was built in 1920; it used a pre-War Mercedes chassis with a six-cylinder Maybach military aeronautical engine that was typically fitted to Zeppelins. The engine had four overhead valves per cylinder and twin Zenith carburetors; the car was more than 5 short tons (4.5t) with a bonnet 8ft (2.4m) long, finished in grey. [1] :Foreword The toy story series of films has plenty of interesting number plates. In the first film you’ll see the plate HAL9000, a reference to the computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and also MOLY1K9 which is a tribute to a dog belonging to one of the production team. In the second film you can spot the plate A113. This code features in all Pixar films and is a reference to room 113 in the Cal Arts College where many of the Pixar team did their training.

A version with primarily aluminium fittings was built for the tidal scenes when Chitty has become stranded before transforming into a boat. It appears on screen for less than a minute, as its appearance was significantly different from the other Chitty’s; the aluminium was substituted as it was thought the sea and salt air would corrode the brass radiator surround of the primary filming cars. The lighter aluminium car also was hoisted for scenes showing the transformation to flying mode.Photo credit: By André Koehne [CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0) or GFDL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html)], via Wikimedia Commons
