What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” This article is part of our larger resource library of popular Bible verse phrases and quotes. We want to provide easy to read articles that answer your questions about the meaning, origin, and history of specific verses within Scripture's context. It is our hope that these will help you better understand the meaning and purpose of God's Word in relation to your life today.

In this dream, I was confronting a person who had been a very close friend decades ago as to why she was no longer communicating with me, even though apparently she’d been visiting near where I live at least four times in the past year. Lately, I have had something on my mind that has been driving me CRAZY and it all stems from Facebook. Don't get me wrong, I am an avid facebook member and enjoying seeing what is going on in people's lives that I care about. But my goodness, some people have taken it WAY TO FAR!!! I would have never thought Facebook would be a platform for people's ridiculous rants about the most controversial subjects. In my opinion, wrong forum!! I don't really care about Billy's opinion on...well on anything now that I think about it! I guess the biggest frustration for me is when someone posts about something that is truly controversial and then almost appears offended when people disagree or call them out on their comments. Uh, shouldn't that be expected?? Differing opinions are what makes this world go round! I know I can always hide this stuff or unfriend people but it is like a car accident...I can't take my eyes away from it! I have a feeling that as we get closer to the election, this is only going to get worse! I also don't like when people use Facebook ina hurtful way. I have a very great friend who has fallen victim to this and it makes me CRAZY! Not only did said person make her feel stupid, he really hurt her fellings as well!!! NOT COOL!! It is really easy to have a strong opinion on something from behind your computer. If you want people to respect you and your opinions, I suggest not posting them all over facebook! It makes you look immature and kind of silly!! If you want a platform to express your opinions...START A BLOG! Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(32) If after the manner of men . . .--These words imply here, as elsewhere ( 1Corinthians 3:3), "merely from a human point of view." What is the advantage or necessity of my incurring daily risks, if I am merely a human being, with a life limited by what we see, and no immortality and resurrection awaiting me? The phrase appears in that way in the New Testament as well. In Luke 12: 19 Luke puts it into Jesus’ mouth. Jesus says in a parable “and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou has much goods laid up for many years; Take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” it is doubtful though, that Jesus intended it in the way that Epicureans interpret it. What do Shakespeare’s characters have to say about eating and drinking?

Ecclesiastes 8:15 teaches us to be joyful in all circumstances. In the midst of a miscarriage, a failed friendship, or job loss, the preacher would remind us that ‘there is a time for everything’ ( Ecclesiastes 3:18), and to experience the joy of God’s gifts despite the worlds teetering foundation. This is not a dismissal of our suffering or tragedy. God sees us in our pain and reminds us that He is with us ( Romans 8:38-39). Rather, this is an exhortation to simply be present in God’s gifts to humanity.

And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many good things stored up, [enough] for many years; rest and relax, eat, drink and be merry (celebrate continually).”’ Jesus tells us that He is the way, the truth, and the life, no one can come to the Father except through Him ( John 14:6). It is in our surrender of control, identity, and life to Jesus that we receive lifelong satisfying joy.If from human motives I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what good is it to me? If the dead are not raised, LET’S EAT AND DRINK, FOR TOMORROW WE DIE. What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

But wait, God has indeed given us one life on earth to bring others to Him. Shouldn’t we live like we’re going to die, and tell people that they only have one life to get right with God? Considering I usually work everyday and have no time for myself, I shouldn't complain about the recent onslaught of activity in my life. My friend Bridgetta and I went to Miami March 23-27th. It was a lot of fun. I had never really been. (besides the night before the cruise last year.) That city is crazy. Guys were hootin' and hollarin' at us the whole time. Granted Bridgetta is a beautiful girl and looks like a model. It just amazes me the audacity that some people have. Does it ever really work to yell at a girl when you are driving pass her in a car at 25 mph? Is she just going to shout out her number so she can meet up with you later for a sexual redevous? Highlights of the trip: Went to a club(Space) at 6am til 9am and danced our butts off. Rode on a boat so fast, I think my laugh lines are smoothed out. Ate at an Indian restaurant, Guru, that made me want to worship Vishnu. Saw inside the Versace mansion. Got a tan.(If you know how white I am, then you know how much this means to me, however little.) Oh, and we had at least one mojito a day! Here are some of the references to drinking in Shakespeare’s plays. A man cannot make him laugh – but that’s no marvel; he drinks no wine. and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many good things laid up for many years, be resting, eat, drink, be merry. Merging with Mother Mary’s energy body is something you can do for yourself in meditation by following through what I’ve suggested above, chakra by chakra. Not that I haven’t always ALSO been a loving, giving, well-meaning, of service, helpful, insightful, high-functioning, achieving, loyal person. But there was that other aspect that rendered me… challenging. A wounded animal is sometimes a little rough around the edges, for sure. I will tell my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.”’

If (according to man) I fought with beasts at Ephesus, what doth it profit me, if the dead rise not again? Let us eat and drink, for to morrow we shall die. And I will say to myself, "You have plenty of goods stored up for many years; relax, eat, drink, celebrate!"' In Isaiah 22, the prophet warns the people of Jerusalem that their hypocritical nature will be their downfall. When the Lord had called for weeping and mourning over impending invasion, instead the people said flippantly, “Let us eat and drink . . . for tomorrow we die” (verse 13). God’s response to their disobedience was to proclaim, “Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned for” (verse 14). And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.”’And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many good things laid up for many years; take your rest; eat, drink, be merry."' Pulpit Commentary Verse 19. - And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years. "What folly!" writes St. Basil. "Had thy soul been a sty, what else couldst thou have promised to it? Art thou so ignorant of what really belongs to the soul, that thou offerest to it the foods of the body? And givest thou to thy soul the things which the draught receives?" Many years. How little did that poor fool, so wise in all matters of earthly business, suspect the awful doom was so close to him! He forgot Solomon's words, "Boast not thyself of to-morrow" ( Proverbs 27:1). Take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. "Extremes meet," suggests Dean Plumptre; "and the life of self-indulgence may spring either from an undue expectation of a lengthened life" (as was the case here), "or from unduly dwelling on its shortness, without taking into account the judgment that comes after it. The latter, as in the 'carpe diem' of Horace ('Odes,' 1:11. 8), was the current language of popular epicureanism" (see St. Paul's reproduction of this thought, 1 Corinthians 15:32); "the former seems to have been more characteristic of a corrupt Judaism." Strong's 3498: (a) adj: dead, lifeless, subject to death, mortal, (b) noun: a dead body, a corpse. From an apparently primary nekus; dead. And I shall say to my soul, 'My soul, you have many goods laid up for many years, be contented, eat, drink and be merry.' “
