The premise is that certain families hold special powers which help them maintain their status. Miyo is the oldest daughter of the Saimori, one of the families which is on the decline. Even though her mother was from a very-highly regarded clan of people with powers, she herself doesn't have any, which means that she has spent her entire life being horribly bullied by her stepmother and half-sister. Her family sends her off as a bride candidate for the young master of the most powerful family, who is notorious for, you guessed it, turning down all candidates. They're convinced that she's going to be sent away in shame, but Kyoka (and his adorable middle-aged servant) actually take to her, which is where the "happy marriage" part comes in. This is Cinderella with a supernatural twist, so the answer isn't going to surprise you. Instead, the question is, is it a satisfying story? And for the most part, the answer is yes. Miyo is a mere pawn in the political matchmaking of at least two families, and years of abuse have made her withdrawn, watchful and scared.

Overall, another powerful and moving volume! I think there will be a calm before the storm, but hoping it's just me being paranoid because with the new goal Miyo is setting her mind to, I desperately want to see her succeed and thrive in her new life. This one is such a soft, slow burn so far and its female lead its such a tragic, melancholic character that I can't help but root for her happiness. I felt myself tearing up a few times during Miyo's inner monologues. I just want to give her a hug. There's a good chance this isn't worth continuing, but I'll probably do so anyway, because this has a few tropes I generally enjoy ("icy hero who turns into a softie for the heroine" is a big one). I really want to like this series, so I'm hoping one version or another (the anime maybe?) eventually makes that possible. I'll suppose foolishly keep trying until I don't have the willpower for it anymore. At least the manga (and eventually anime) version gives me pretty artwork.Talking about Kudou is talking about every shoujo ikemen ever, really. He was said to threat all of her bride candidates while being cold and intimidating to the point no one was able to stand him, but little after Miyo comes, poof, that thing that was said before? It is all gone, he researches about Miyo and becomes this cool and loving fianceé, that will do anything for her, he is also very rich and comes from an important household where he is the head of the family. He is also so incredible with his super natural abilities that he is hailed as the best, and it shows, this guy is basically the Avatar, master of the four elements, of course, I'm kinda exagerating there, but it is almost how it feels. It was extremely upsetting seeing the physical abuse she endured in the first half of this volume. I had no idea what was going to happen OR if something happened, if it would even be good. I think the last time I had fear for a character that intense was when I read volume two of Villains Are Destined to Die. I had to remind myself to breathe and desperately hope she would be okay. Kiyoka is on his way to rescue his future wife from her incredibly evil step-sister. After rescuing her and taking her home the couple’s affection for one another grows even more and they are officially engaged. Before they get married Miyo wants to learn how to be Kiyoka’s wife (she is wanting to learn more about being the wife of someone high ranking). Kiyoka asks his sister to come and help her out! Now Miyo is going to meet her future sister in law!

Cinderella type of story it's not my thing. The FL suffers her whole life until a male "prince", strong, beautiful and wealthy appears to save her, and he's the only reason she begins to overcome her traumas Miyo wondered if Kiyoka’s father would be disappointed and angry when he discovered he hadn’t gotten his son the woman he’d bargained for. She expressed this worry to Kiyoka, who snorted dismissively. Miyo Saimori should have been raised as the beloved eldest daughter of the noble Saimori family. Instead, since she wasn't born with her mother's Gift, her father neglected her after her mother's death and allowed his new wife to treat her as though she were less than a servant. When Kaya, his daughter by his new wife, turned out to be Gifted, it sealed Miyo's fate.
