Nevertheless, after reading the five tales included in this collection, I started thinking whether they might not have something in common – apart from the skilful, suggestive yet unobtrusive prose they are written in –, uniting every single one of them. Saying this, I don’t even know, hardly knowing the first thing at all about du Maurier, whether these five stories were originally included in one collection or whether their joint appearance in one volume is simply due to a publisher’s choice. Be that as it may, if it is the latter, it can be said to be a felicitous choice all the same because, as the title of the collection implies, all five tales are more or less about people’s tendency to deceive themselves, to give in to denial behaviour and to suppress part of their inner lives. Sometimes, this is quite a wise decision, sometimes it isn’t.

Hank, apparently, used to look at her like he worshiped her. He now barely looks at her at all. Abby worries that Hank is attracted to other women and not interested in her anymore. All while she is giving up everything she ever loved to be with him. Abby wonders what his intentions are with the relationship. She thinks he is a hunter and likely enjoyed the pursuit. Now they have been together a long time, he is bored. Hank denies this. In the dark, among the bushes and trees, two people overhear things about themselves that force them to re-evaluate their lives. The next day, several of the party experience mishaps and personal humiliations, and by the end of the excursion all apart from Robin have met the fate that they most dread. In dealing with the disasters the whole group learn a great deal about themselves and their loved ones, and they return happier people. But here is a monster story with an exciting bait-and-switch, whose heart bleeds slowly like “ Blue Valentine.” If the emotions don’t hit you, if the conversations don’t look like previous crossroads you’ve faced with a long-time partner, at least the ambition behind them will. And the final scenes are punchy, with a legitimate, winning jolt. The balance that "After Midnight" strikes between a two-hander and a monster story warrants a Valentine's Day weekend look, and maybe even a scary conversation. Ron & Evan are in business to support e-sports in schools. Their extra-curricular activities have brought teamwork learning to kids all over. We'll also talk about fostering kids. You can learn more about them and their projects at https://virtualreload.com. Thought: 3/3/3/2/2. No great conundra, but the stories keep the reader thinking ahead, and have some interesting moments. I thought the penultimate story bland and obvious, and the final story too nonsensical and farfetched to engage the brain much.

Daphne du Maurier's occasional volumes of short stories have always shown how compellingly she can make our flesh creep (think of the brilliant 'The Birds', and that truly horrifying story 'Kiss Me Again, Stranger'). This new collection, which contains five long stories, makes exactly the same stunning, sinister impact. Not After Midnight-the title gives warning that here are no cosy tales for reading to a maiden aunt or an elderly cousin. On my first attempt at reading this, I actually didn't feel much inclined to carry on with the book. I think I often find it hard to 'settle in' to short stories because compared to a full-length novel, the action seems so rushed, and that was definitely the case here. I felt there was something stilted about the dialogue and I wasn't sure I could believe in Laura's reaction to what she was told. I got about halfway through the story before I realised I wasn't sure I wanted to keep reading, and decided to read another of the stories and then make up my mind. I really enjoyed that one, and found after I'd finished it that I really wanted to find out what happened next in Don't Look Now. I'm aware of the film, but haven't seen it, so although I knew the bones of the story, I didn't know how it would end. The tension and atmosphere grew as the story progressed, I was gripped by its mystery and to be honest, I was truly quite frightened by the ending! That said, this is a fine collection of stories by an exceptional author. I really enjoyed her writing style and the the way that she was able to bring various settings around the world to life. That said, I don't think any of the stories really hit it out of the park. Maybe I expect more from the author of Rebecca and Jamaica Inn but I felt like she set up several of the stories for a big finish and then....they just ended. I award this anthology ★★★½ stars out of five although at least half a star is awarded out of respect for Dame Daphne.

Later, Billy stops by the bar again, and sees Kate persuade a very drunk, dejected Mr. Futterman to walk home instead of driving. Billy walks Kate home, and on the way, she tells him that she dislikes Christmas, but gets defensive when he asks why. Just as they arrive at Kate's place, Billy asks her out, and she accepts. The reason why I focus on this one is that I can be a little more lenient with my no spoilers since I am sure everything has either heard or seen the film plus I had a rather strange experience this morning which brought the story in to focus. five. Laura literally adored her. Johnnie and I were nowhere.''Give her time,' repeated the doctor, 'give her time. And anyway, you're While together, Shane points out the absurdity of Hank’s claims about the monster. He reminds Hank that they should be family now. That he and Abby should be married. Hank admits that he has been an asshole. He admits that they should have been family by now. He disagrees with Shane, though, and tells him the monster is definitely real. I would like to thank my wonderful guests, George Bentley and Glenda Benevides, for putting up with my shenanigans and being on the show. We had a conversation that was both entertaining and meaningful. It makes sense that this story is the one that had a movie made from it. It had great buildup and the ending was one that the reader wouldn’t expect. While contemporary writers were dealing critically with such subjects as the war, alienation, religion, poverty, Marxism, psychology and art, and experimenting with new techniques such as the stream of consciousness, du Maurier produced 'old-fashioned' novels with straightforward narratives that appealed to a popular audience's love of fantasy, adventure, sexuality and mystery. At an early age, she recognised that her readership was comprised principally of women, and she cultivated their loyal following through several decades by embodying their desires and dreams in her novels and short stories. My review of Borges last year has forced me to think about how to score short story collections, as I think I was rather too hard on him. This, I think, is because I judged the collection as though it were a novel – but many people will not read it in one sitting. So perhaps a collection’s value is more about the value of the individual stories. Or to put it more directly: I think that that ‘in total’ view effectively weighted all the stories equally to find an ‘average’ score, when in fact, when it comes to our opinions of a collection, we tend to weight the good bits higher. We’re more likely to recommend a collection with one genius story and four rubbish ones than one with five mediocre stories – at least, I am. I would like to thank my wonderful guests, William Collier and Allan Misner, for putting up with my shenanigans and being on the show. We had a conversation that was both entertaining and meaningful.that was till this morning - when outside the house where there is a very large tree a large number of crows started to form and yes they sounded exactly like that. I later found out they were hounding a Red Kite which was circling but still it did bring that school house scene to mind. The talent on display reminded me of both Ruth Rendell and Joyce Carol Oates. All three authors share the ability to effortlessly create characters that are recognizable and rooted in our reality, while maintaining a dispassionate detachment from those characters. Cold-blooded writers, writing about mainly unsympathetic people. Perhaps not a fun experience but there was certainly much to admire. Her prose is elegant; her characters are unpleasant but interesting; her themes are darkly fascinating; her disinterest in spelling things out and thus keeping her stories ambiguous is admirable.
