Review of The Death of Mrs. Westaway, by Ruth Ware. Publishers Weekly, 2 Apr. 2018, www.publishersweekly.com/978-1-5011-5621-2. Accessed 2 Aug. 2018. As for the mystery itself, it was enjoyable enough, though it's predicated on the outlandish notion that no one would figure out there are two people with the same name, even when there are pictures of these people.

In a Dark, Dark Wood (2015): New Line Cinema has acquired film rights. Reese Witherspoon's Pacific Standard is attached to produce. [29] The Death of Mrs Westaway (2018) is about Hal, a young tarot card reader, who receives a mysterious and large inheritance. When Hal attends the funeral of the deceased it becomes clear that she was not the intended recipient of the inheritance and that she has become involved in a dangerous mystery. [24] All hail Queen Ruth Ware! It's no secret that lady authors have been taking over the psychological thriller scene in the past decade (GiRl PoWeR), but there are a handful that seem to come to the forefront when planning out what we want to read over the summer months. Ms. Ware has been a highly coveted name in recent years and for good reason; whether you have read her books from the beginning or are just jumping into her scene, you'll note that she writes a gripping novel with memorable characters and breathtaking atmosphere. While all of her novels would be shelved clearly under the psych thriller persona, this one shined more brightly than the rest, at least in my opinion, due to it's departure into the gothic suspense territory.I wanted to be pulled under by the weight of it and the story definitely did not disappoint in that regard. Harriet Westaway, who goes by Hal, ekes out a living as a tarot card reader on the pier in Brighton. Hal is alone in the world, and life is a struggle, especially during the off-season when clients are scarce. Hal’s problems began when Mrs. Westaway’s will was read and she learned she had been bequeathed the entirety of the estate with the exception of some money for the other grandchildren and the housekeeper. She knew that she would never be able to pass the inspection required by such a large bequest but Abel Westaway, one of Mrs. Westaway’s sons, gave Hal a picture of the Westaway siblings that included Hal’s mother. Hal decided to stay with the Westaways longer hoping to learn about her mother’s connection to them. I’ve recently fallen into the terrifying and bizarre world of thrillers. I love a good horror movie, or even some suspense in a movie or book, so it should be no surprise that I started thrillers. A thriller I was seeing all over social media (especially BookTube) is The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware. One of my favorite book bloggers, BooksandLala gave the book 4.5 stars, so I had to give it a shot. She calls the novel cinematic and engaging, and the best of Ware’s books so far.

The Turn of the Key (2019) is about a nanny and four children, written as if updating Henry James's The Turn of the Screw in a 21st-century setting. [25]Hal had the promenade to herself, the flashing lights of the pier the only sign of life, apart from the gulls wheeling and crying over the dark restless waters of the channel. (c) When reading a thriller &/or suspense novel I like to be able to work out the why and how and be pleasantly surprised by the little pieces of puzzles that were left along the way that I either missed or didn’t think were important to the twists or reveals. I thought some pieces of that puzzle were left out here and in some instances didn’t match-up so therefore this novel just didn’t work for me. Someone please give me a diagram of the tangled roots of this family tree. And a diagram of who murdered whom, please. I’m still a bit confused. Andreeva, Nellie (6 June 2023). "Ruth Ware's Novel 'Zero Days' Acquired By Universal International Studios For Series Development". Deadline . Retrieved 20 June 2023.

This book revolves around twenty-one year old Harriet Westaway “Hal”, who took over her mother’s tarot card reading business after she passed away three years ago. Years of being alone and struggling to pay the bills have left Hal frustrated and desperate. One day, she receives a mysterious letter advising that she has been left a substantial inheritance from Mrs. Westaway, a grandmother she has never heard of. Hal travels to the Trepassen House estate where she meets the family of Mrs. Westaway. Hal makes her living as a tarot card reader, a skill she learned from her mother. What do you think of tarot cards? Have you ever done a tarot card reading? What happened? And this story wraps up with so many loose ends! What happened to the loan sharks? What happened with the will? What happened with the rest of the family? What were her future plans? Why would a certain somebody help her when they had no real motive? I don’t know friends, but this was just a big letdown for me. Sorry to have missed you. We would like to discuss you’re financal situation. We will call again. …In the novel The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware, twenty-one-year-old Harriet “Hal” Westaway was struggling to make ends meet when she received notification she had been named as a beneficiary in Mrs. Westaway’s will. Even though Hal knew she was not the granddaughter of this woman, as the letter indicated, Hal decided to take her chances that her identity would not be questioned very closely and see what might happen. What Hal discovered as she became acquainted with the Westaways was both much better, and much worse, than she had ever imagined.

She says she goes to the Westaway’s simply for their money, but I don’t think that was her only motive. Hal, this isolated woman, craves connection, and love. Hal is set up as a fascinating character, and receiving the funeral invitation, as well as actually going to the funeral, shows her desperation for not only money, but connection. The family she meets upon traveling to the Westaway estate, Trepassen House, is hella eccentric and it was a ton of fun watching the truth unfold. Hal arrives at the funeral, where she meets the lawyer and family. After the service, they return to the family home, called Trepassen, where Hal learns she is set to receive a much larger inheritance than she thought. As she gets to know the family better, she begins to doubt her plan. She also knows that something isn’t quite right. Hal begins digging into the family’s past and unearths many surprises along the way.
