About this deal

Computerised tomography (CT) scanning or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning is occasionally needed. A fracture at the base of the fifth metatarsal bone is often mistaken for an ankle sprain and therefore not rested or supported enough. This can lead to problems in healing and continuing pain. Lesser toe deformity correction– TWB for 48 hours and then WBAT in post-operative shoe for at least 6 weeks Achilles tendon debridement– Non-weight bearing (NWB) for two weeks followed by full weight bearing (FWB) in removable boot for 4 weeks Your doctor is likely to suggest an X-ray of your foot if they suspect a metatarsal fracture. Acute metatarsal fractures

It's advised to break in new running shoes gradually - many injuries result from a sudden change in running shoes. They are also frequently seen in ballet dancers and gymnasts. If properly treated then metatarsal fractures should heal without long-term consequences. If not recognised and treated then some of these problems can occur: st MTP joint cheilectomy– TWB for 48 hours and then WBAT in post-operative shoe for at least 6 weeks See the separate leaflet called Ageing Feet for more detail. What are the symptoms of a metatarsal fracture? Acute metatarsal fractureSpecialised shoes. Shoes fitted with spring-loaded braces can help prevent the foot dropping whilst walking. One type uses a cuff around the ankle, a spring above and a hook in the shoelace area which connects to the spring and pulls the foot up during walking. Breaking the top of the foot is a common injury for many people, especially those who regularly play sport or engage in any other practice that risks impact. There are a great many bones in the foot, but the most common fracture is to one of the metatarsals, which are connected to each toe at the top of the foot. It’s usually possible to make a full recovery from a broken foot in around eight weeks, using the services of the NHS or a private physiotherapist. How Do You Know if You Have a Broken Foot? Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs). These are specialised L-shaped ankle splints. They simply hold the foot at 90° to the lower leg so that it can't drop down. Most metatarsal fractures occur in younger people, as they are more likely to be involved in the kinds of sports and marching activities that make them more likely. However, as we become older the 'springiness' and padding of our feet tend to reduce. This means that our feet absorb impact less well and it is easier to fracture bones. Supportive footwear will make this much less likely. A walking assessment by a physiotherapist will be carried out either before or after your surgery. If crutches are required, you will be instructed on their correct use. The crutches are adjusted for each individual and are not intended for use by others. You will be told how much weight if any can you put through your operated foot.

The majority of patients require 2-3 follow-ups but each operation has an individual post-operative course and every patient heals differently. Your follow-up will be tailored individually as necessary.

Open or closed: an open fracture is one where the skin is broken over the fracture so that there is a route of possible infection from the outside into the broken bones. This is a more serious type of fracture, with more damage to the soft tissues around it making treatment and healing more complicated. Specialist assessment is needed. Nerve stimulation. Sometimes stimulating the common peroneal nerve electrically improves foot drop. This type of treatment is usually used in people with disabilities and is sometimes called neuromuscular electrical stimulation or functional electrical stimulation. Many people with multiple sclerosis, or who have had a stroke, have had success with it. I assume this is about more than clean feet. Treating the bottom of the foot as a drainage vent for the whole body makes sense from a reflexological or even gravitational standpoint, if not a biological one. I hope so because my feet are famous for being clean. They never smell. I have other bad qualities – gluttony, cheapness, a tendency to compartmentalise emotions – but it has never been argued my plates of meat are not hygienic. I accept it would be better to have smelly feet and not those other qualities, but that is not my situation. This is an operation to “fuse” or stiffen the ankle joint. Why is it performed? Ankle fusions are performed for two main reasons: It will become obvious to you that when you stand up and put your foot down it will start to throb and hurt. Elevating the foot & ankle will alleviate the pain and discomfort post-operatively. Bleeding

Metatarsal fractures (of both types) occur more easily if the metatarsal bones are weakened due to 'thinning' of the bones (osteoporosis). People sometimes say that it isn't possible to walk on a broken foot but this is not correct. Whether you can walk on a broken foot depends on which bone is broken (and whereabouts along its length), whether the fracture is displaced, how supportive your shoes are, and your personal tolerance to pain. It is, therefore, possible to walk on a broken foot, although it is likely to be very uncomfortable to do so and it may well make matters worse if you do. Stress fractures It's possible to buy special covers for plaster casts to keep them dry when washing or bathing. Ask a pharmacist for more information. Do not try to use plastic bags, bin liners, cling film or similar to keep the cast dry, as these are not reliable methods.

How Do You Know if You Have a Broken Foot?

Broken bones bleed, so bruising and swelling can develop and you may have difficulty putting weight on the affected foot.

May make an audible sound at the time of the break and you will usually have immediate pain and tenderness around the area of the fracture. Typically the stress fracture causes a tender area along the line of the second or third metatarsal bone.Movement of your foot may also be limited. Surprisingly, however, pain can settle within a few hours. You will be discharged with a copy of your operation note, which will have detailed post-operative instructions. It will also outline the follow-up after your surgery. These will normally heal without any complications and, in time, people are able to return to their previous activities fully. You can return to your activities when you can perform them without pain. This will typically take six to twelve weeks.
