About this deal

As a woodworker, you will know that wood is one of the most versatile mediums of building materials that you can get. Many factors make wood durable, versatile, and easy to work with. In many cases, wood has some advantages even over metal, steel, and concrete. Alder is another hardwood worth mentioning here. It is among the softest of hardwoods and perhaps with a slightly higher tensile strength than pine. Comments: It’s a shame that the term ‘boxwood’ has become so convoluted and confused in modern times, as there seems to be one particular wood species that has historically been associated with the name boxwood: Buxus sempervirens. It is this species that can be considered the original, genuine boxwood. When trimming boxwood, don’t overdo it. While a nice, compact bush may look healthy on the outside, that dense outer foliage (caused from over pruning) can keep air and light from getting to the inner part of the plant. Thin the outer growth annually so that air and light can get in, and prune away any dead or diseased branches from the center of the plant. Shearing can be done with hand pruners, hedge clippers or electric trimmers. Winter care: Choose from brass, chrome, copper, rust, plywood, oak, walnut as well painted and powder coated finishes.

Another common requirement for lightweight wood is for making shelves where any other type of wood could prove to be too heavy. Lightest Types of Wood Allergies/Toxicity: Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, boxwood has been reported as a sensitizer. Usually most common reactions simply include eye, skin, and respiratory irritation. See the articles Wood Allergies and Toxicity and Wood Dust Safety for more information. Since the bush responds well to pruning, the classic use of boxwood is in neatly trimmed hedges. But the smaller, slower-growing types also look great in containers: Install a couple in two urns and display them at an entrance where you want a tasteful, symmetrical design. Color/Appearance: Color tends to be a light cream to yellow, which tends to darken slightly with prolonged exposure to light. Sapwood not distinct from heartwood.

Lookalikes/Substitutes: While true boxwood is restricted to the Buxus genus (which itself consists of about 100 different species), there are a handful of boxwood-like woods which are botanically unrelated, but nonetheless share many of the characteristics of true boxwood (e.g., high density, yellowish heartwood, and very small diffuse pores giving a fine even texture). Standouts include: Knysna boxwood (Gonioma kamassi), Maraicabo boxwood (Gossypiospermum praecox), San Domingo boxwood (Phyllostylon brasiliensis), and Castelo Boxwood (Calycophyllum multiflorum). Lightwoods tend to impart a clean and sterile effect to the environment and particularly where pastels or light colors are used. But that is not to say that you cannot use it in areas of darker shades also, where it can present a striking contrast. Porosity : diffuse porous; growth rings usually visible from latewood zones having slightly darker fibers and a slightly lower frequency of pores Among lightweight woods, walnut is a bit of a wildcard entry on this list. It is one of the expensive options in the wood among hardwoods, but it is surprisingly light. So, we felt compelled to include walnut wood in this list of the lightest types of wood.

In a kitchen, you need to add clarity and practicality in the way you use light wood. Putting a set of chairs and tables made of light wood in a kitchen creates a comfortable look. You can even add a couple of light wood stools or make your kitchen cabinets and shelves of light wood. You get a serene but practical atmosphere in your kitchen space. Balsa is the lightest type of wood in the United States. It is however stronger than many lighter kinds of wood and played a major role in building airplanes in the early days. Today balsa still makes model airplanes and it also finds use in many areas of boat building. Parenchyma : generally not visible, even with magnification, though sometimes diffuse-in-aggregates parenchyma is presentLeaves affected by boxwood blight. Photo Courtesy of A. Windham / University of Tennessee. What is boxwood blight? If you live in an area that is affected, Gem Box® and Strongbox® inkberry hollies can be great boxwood alternatives. Both are native evergreens that grow similarly in size, shape, and texture, and provide better resistance to disease and winter damage. To make the 45º angle cuts, I used a table saw sled made specially for this type of cuts and you can see how I made it right here.

They prefer partial or dappled shade, but can tolerate full sun — short of scorching mid-day sun. Overexposure to sun causes burning and bronzing of foliage. If planting in a brighter location, look for varieties that may be more tolerant of sun, such as ‘Morris Midget’. Do boxwoods bloom? Pine is good for making smaller boxes. There are different types of pinewood available, yellow pine being the most widely used in the United States. Pine cuts easily and takes fasteners like nails and screws well. Grain/Texture:Boxwood has a very fine, even texture with a natural luster. The grain tends to be straight or slightly irregular. One of the common species from the cedar family is western red cedar. The wood is reddish and straight-grained, slightly aromatic, and moderately soft. Western red cedar makes good outdoor furniture and it survives well in humid environments. You can use light wood in a living room for making bookshelves, coffee tables, bookcases, and wooden flooring. Fixing it with neutral tones is possible in a living room or you can even add contrast against darker colors as a daring move. In the Kitchen Lights. Visit a nearby hardware store and invest in several light bulbs. Pay attention to “Daylight” fluorescent light bulbs or “Full Spectrum” bulbs. In addition, it will be a great idea to construct a lighting fixture for your DIY photo light box. For this purpose, you may use your desk lamp. Cherry is moderately expensive but has a fairly long life. It is well-known for its use in making furniture, flooring, and paneling. It creates a warm ambiance in any room where it is used. Alder Sustainability: This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices, and is reported by the IUCN as being a species of least concern. Woodworkers will always be comfortable using lightweight wood that is easy to work with. There is a general misconception because lightwood is softer, it is not as strong as heavier wood. There are many light kinds of wood that are sufficiently strong as well. Mahogany and pinewood are prime examples of light woods that are strong. Why do we need light wood?

Maple is another light wood that you can find across the United States and throughout the world. It is a light-colored wood and the colors may range from yellow shades to white and sometimes with a bit of pink.

Lightest Types of Wood

Alder is graded very highly as lumber goes and you can get a glossy finish to this wood, which adds to its good looks. Applications of Light Wood Boxwood bushes are extremely flexible and can adapt to various types of well-drained soils. Ideal soil pH is 6.5 to 7. For more on proper soil preparation and how to adjust your pH if needed, read Garden Soil 101. Amendments & fertilizer: Boxwood leaf miners, scale insects, lesion nematodes, caterpillars and mites can be a problem; treat with organic neem oil or insecticidal spray. They can also be susceptible to powdery mildew, Pythium root rot, canker and leaf spots. Boxwood blight is a serious problem in many states. See below for more information and planting alternatives. Deer resistance: It plays a major role in making furniture which needs to be moved around a lot. Walnut has a dark, chocolaty color to the extent of looking purple and it makes good wall paneling and flooring in addition to furniture. Maple is moderately light and does not have as long a life as several hardwoods. But it serves a vital role in the construction industry. Maple also makes good musical instruments and indoor furniture. Due to its limited resistance to moisture, insects, and rot, maple is more of an indoors type of wood. Ash
