If you need to start taking another medicine while you're using hormonal contraception, make sure your GP or pharmacist knows that you're using this type of contraception. The hard capsules are swallowed with sufficient liquid (preferably a glass of drinking water [200 ml]). This can happen with, for example, drugs used to reduce levels of bile acid, such as cholestyramine.
Some hormonal contraceptives may change the effect of other medicines, such as the epilepsy treatment lamotrigine and the immunosuppressant drug ciclosporin. Antibiotics ( Neomycin, Nystatin, Natamycin, Streptomycin, Polymyxin B, Paromomycin, Amphotericin B, Kanamycin, Vancomycin, Colistin, Rifaximin) You may be advised to change how you take the medication or to use a different method of contraception.Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. There are certain types of medicine that can increase the enzymes in your body. This is known as being "enzyme-inducing". If diarrhoea occurs as a side effect of a medicine, it could affect absorption of the combined pill or progestogen-only pill. An example of this is the weight loss drug orlistat.
How long to take it for
As the active substance in Pentofuryl 200 mg hard capsules is not absorbed, no symptoms of poisoning are to be expected. The patient information leaflet that comes with medicines may advise that the medicine cannot be used with certain types of contraception. In the event of persistent, unclear or new symptoms as well as diarrhea that lasts longer than 3 days or
rifampicin-like antibiotics (see Will antibiotics stop my contraception working? for more information) If you forget to take Pentofuryl 200 mg hard capsules or have taken too little, please continue to take Pentofuryl 200 mg hard capsules the next time as described in the dosage instructions. Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of Pentofuryl 200 mg hard capsules is too strong or too weak.When you take 2 or more medicines at the same time, the effects of 1 medicine can be altered by the other. This is known as an interaction. Enzyme-inducing medicines speed up the processing of some contraceptive hormones and therefore reduce the levels of these hormones in your bloodstream. Your GP or nurse may advise you to use an alternative or additional form of contraception while taking another medicine. Please do not stop your treatment with Pentofuryl 200 mg hard capsules without talking to your doctor. Your illness might worsen by this.
