About this deal

A 2005 survey reported by The Guardian revealed Parma Violets to be the least popular sweet among the Millennial generation. [18] Parma Violets were created in 1946 [8] by the Derbyshire company Swizzels Matlow. [1] [9] They are sweets that are hard, biconcave discs, based on similar aniseed confectionery traditionally consumed in India after a spicy meal. [10] Their flavour has been described as sweet with a soapy or floral taste. [8] [11] The current recipe includes sugar, stearic acid, modified starch, glucose syrup, and anthocyanin. [2]

Sweet violets used to be a very popular cut flower. In Victorian times ladies would pin sweet violets to their clothes and hair.

The promoter’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Parma violets originated in the Levant, that is in Syria, Turkey and Lebanon. They were growing in what is now Italy by the 18th century. A favourite flower of Napoleon Bonaparte at least one variety was grown by the Empress Josephine’s gardeners at Malmaison where it was known as ‘La Violette de Parme’. But Groves have been nurserymen since 1866! Like many other nursery businesses they initially were seedsmen. Six generations of the Grove family have been nurserymen.

All are grown in 1 litre pots filled with Melcourt Sylvamix peat free compost. This is very similar to my favourite peat free compost which is called SylvaGrow Multipurpose Compost. In Ian Fleming's James Bond series, hard candies very similar in description to Parma Violets are the favourite sweet of the supervillain Ernst Stavro Blofeld due to their breath freshening properties. [15] Viola odorata [Sweet Violet] in a hedgerowI was always intrigued by the story of the Clevedon violet growing industry. Until recently I lived in North Somerset just 6 miles from Clevedon.Even on a cold late autumn day I’m stopped by the scent of a bed of Palma Violets planted along a path which leads from my study to the nursery. Palma violets “... possess a delightful fragrance reminiscent of ordinary sweet violet perfume mixed with that of wallflowers”.* Little wonder that in the 19th century around Grasse in the south of France there were large plantings being grown for the perfume industry. Sadly in the 1890s a synthetic violet fragrance was discovered and was soon manufactured cheaply putting an end to the production of the natural oil. They are mostly double flowered. Their scent is very characteristic it reminded me of corner shop sweets! Behind their large and very organised garden centre I was invited into the main glasshouse where the violets are produced. Duke, Simon (26 March 2019). "Brothers launch Parma Violet cider and social media is going mad for it". ChronicleLive. Their perfumed flavour has an army of loyal fans and Swizzels make 100 million rolls of Parma Violets every year. Of course, it takes a discerning palate to appreciate their delicate flavour!
