About this deal

A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. Standing in the Shadows is the twenty-eighth and final installment in the late Peter Robinson's long-running Inspector Banks series. Reading this novel is bittersweet, like the affectionate and protracted goodbye of a very dear friend.

One of the finest police procedural writers around... [ Standing in the Shadows] is as narratively rich and surprising as Robinson's best work. Knowing it's his last makes the reading bittersweet."— New York Times Book Review What I find incredible is that after 28 novels featuring Banks we still learn new things about him. The supporting characters are well developed & there are some nice touches of humour amidst the drama. Characters are luminous conduits through which the narrative unfurls, bursting forth vividly under Robinson’s hand. This sorcery of characterization allows the story to coalesce around their palpable presence, creating an immersive experience that ignites the imagination. Peter Robinson’s superior plotting skills, strong social conscience, palpable sense of place, and, not least, voracious love of music put him in the pantheon of contemporary British crime writers... a lovely way to remember Banks and his creator, who leaves behind a legacy of novels that explore the thorniest regions of the heart, mind, and soul.”— Air Mail on Standing in the Shadows Meanwhile…….Late November, 2019. On an archaeological dig near Scotch Corner, Grace Hutchinson unearths a skeleton that turns out to be far more recent than the Roman remains she is looking for. Detective Superintendent Alan Banks and his team are called in, and the investigation into the find begins.Set in one of the most beautiful areas on the planet, your descriptions of scenery and settings have been as rich in detail as your development of your characters and their relationships. I'd add that I enjoyed the TV series in itself, but somehow it didn't line up with my internal image of Banks and his team - too much Leeds, and Steven Tomkinson just wasn't how I saw Banks, which is not his fault at all. If Gillespie didn’t exactly retire under a cloud, there were rumors clinging to him from early in his career when he was privy to an undercover operation where police infiltrated radical student organizations. Armed with this knowledge, Banks senses there may be a connection between the moribund inquiry into Alice Poole’s death, and the body found in Gillespie’s field. The first episodes of the Inspector Banks TV adaptation came along in 2010, with Tompkinson well received playing the title character. It ran for five series.

Fans will welcome this latest Banks adventure and revel in what Michael Connelly calls Robinson's ' clear eye for the telling detail.' * Booklist * He then moved to Toronto, to York University, to take a PhD in English. There he organised various poetry events and helped set up a small press with friends, whose publications included a volume of his own poems. He settled in the city after meeting his future wife, Sheila Halladay, a lawyer, there.Mr. Robinson has always been consistent with his characterizations of Banks and his team. He paints them brilliantly. The reader feels like they are old friends and gets to witness their conversations and actions. I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know them all. O]ne of the finest police procedural writers around... [ Standing in the Shadows] is as narratively rich and surprising as Robinson's best work' NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW Like some of Robinson's previous novels this one is set across different time periods. In 2019 Banks & his team investigate the discovery of a skull by archaeologists & in 1980-81 the author mixes fact with fiction with the hunt for the real life Yorkshire Ripper.

The book has layers upon layers. While describing two main plots, the reader is well aware that the plots must come together as one, but getting there is more than half the fun. There are surprises in this story. Many coming at the end of the novel. The involvement ranges from a lonely college student all the way to police corruption and the IRA. Good stuff! The second storyline is set 40 years later, with the discovery of a skeleton during the construction of a new shopping mall. Inspector Banks and his team struggle to identify the deceased and determine how the body ended up buried in an abandoned field.

Another thrilling ride with Inspector Banks and his crew.... Fans of the series will love this one." — Red Carpet Crash on Standing in the Shadows That’s right. 2008. ‘Lost their moral compass,’ according to one of them. As if they ever had one.” RIP Peter Robinson. No, I haven't read the book yet, but so sad at his passing. I'm sure I'll love this one as much as the others. Will really miss these stories and characters. In 1990 he published a stand-alone novel, Caedmon’s Song, a psychological thriller in which two young women in different parts of England find their paths crossing in an alarming way.

If you are a first-time reader of Peter Robinson’s DCI Alan Banks criminal procedurals, you might be forgiven for thinking that a connection between an unsolved murder in 1980 and the discovery of a body in 2019 will be made through diligent police investigation. Yes, but, because music and memories underscore the plot of every DCI Banks mystery. I've thoroughly enjoyed Peter Robinson's police procedural novels featuring DCI (now DS) Alan Banks & it's with great sadness that after the author's death this will be his final story. The 28 th twisting installment in the DCI Alan Banks mystery series that Stephen King calls “the best now on the market.” This series continues to be as thoughtful and intelligent as ever . . . Long may it continue.”— The Guardianon Not Dark Yet The late Peter Robinson penned another brilliant entry into the Inspector Banks series in his latest, and last, book in the series.
