After extensive research for the past few months and testing several models, I’m here to tell you the top 4 models I think are currently the best. But before I get into that, let me outline what I consider essential when choosing the right head unit. The ATOTO S8 Premium is compatible with both wired and wireless CarPlay. You can effortlessly transition from wire CarPlay to wireless CarPlay with minimal lag and no setup required! And its larger size screen makes CarPlay interaction more accessible than ever before. It also supports other connectivity options such as Bluetooth and Android Auto. When I opened the center console again to install the Dinavin frame, I made sure to locate and positively seat the solenoid connector. This was easy. A little too easy. Unlike any other electrical connector in the bimmer, this one was loose. It’s very easy to unseat it. For now I simply reseated it. If necessary I will safety wire it in the future. Looking to buy either the A6 PF or F7 XE unit shortly. Both are similarly priced however I'm wondering which unit I should opt for.

There are only two choices here and the correct one is “Custom.” Then select “Key Settings” to assign functions to steering wheel buttons. To do this press and hold a function on the ATOTO screen until it is outlined in blue. Next press and hold the desired button on the wheel until it beeps and highlights in purple. Repeat until all desired buttons are mapped. Simple right? The startup time is lower than in my old head unit, ~10 seconds to boot + ~10 seconds for Android Auto to be fully initialized. This will make the installation quite a pain in some cases. In my car I needed to take the whole front plate off and push the wires out.

The head unit has a lot of different customization options. For example, you can change the wallpaper and startup logo of the head unit. Third, touchscreen responsiveness is key. A sluggish, laggy touchscreen can destroy the driving experience and make using all the features of your head unit a chore. It has fast charging while using Android Auto. My phone has a very old battery which means I can finally keep it alive during long drives. With my old head unit, I always lost battery while driving. Currently I'm gaining about 1% every few minutes. The downside of this head unit is that Android Auto takes a bit longer, at around 40 seconds, but other than that, I haven’t encountered any issues. I’m really happy with the ATOTO F7. CarPlay works quite well. Much better than fiddling with the phone while I’m driving.The bass does not have its own slider. It needs to be changed directly from the EQ which makes it difficult for "normal" people. Secondly, you’ll want a head unit with plenty of connectivity options so you can easily sync your smartphone or other devices.
