About this deal

Collecting bitters is one of my favorite things to do. As you can see by the photos here, I have built up quite a collection. This is only about… maybe a third of my collection! I’ll tell you more about it soon. You’re most likely familiar with Angostura bitters, the paper-wrapped bottle that lines many a bar shelf. But there are other bitters options available to customize your drink of choice. Not only is Peychaud's a fantastic addition to classic drinks, but you'll also want to use them to spice up modern creations. A perfect example is the American whiskey and sake recipe known as the Manhattan Love Story. Here, the bitters play well against the spice of a ginger liqueur and the result is phenomenal.

Sweet, tart, spiced: This cherry old fashioned has so much complex flavor. Sweetness and tartness from the cherry juice, rich, spiced bourbon, caramel-y maple syrup, intense bitters, and refreshing lemon juice. Each sip is perfectly balanced! The human response to bitterness developed over the process of evolution to protect humans from the consumption of toxic substances. Oftentimes plants, fruits, bark, or herbs that were bitter were toxic. Over time that meant humans developed a sensitivity to bitterness as a defense mechanism to protect us. Bourbon / whiskey: Bourbon is typically the preferred spirit for an old fashioned, but regular whiskey will do just fine. Since you're mixing it with cherry juice and maple syrup, you don't have to break the bank with super expensive bourbon – something less expensive will do. Why? Because this recipe calls for homemade cherry bourbon, which enhances the classic Manhattan taste. An infusion of the bark, combined with crab apple bark has been used as a cure-all tonic in treating colds and various other ailments. Newer to the market, non-alcoholic bitters do exist. California-based All the Bitter produces an array of zero-proof bitters made with vegetable glycerin and apple cider vinegar instead of alcohol. History of bitters Its sedative, anti-inflammatory, and astringent actions are helpful in calming the digestive tract, reducing inflammation and irritation, and reducing water volume in stool. Bitters can also be used in low-alcohol drinks, too. Try adding them to coffee, tea or seltzer. The latter is referred to as bitters and soda. Are bitters alcoholic? In small amounts this exceedingly poisonous compound stimulates respiration, improves digestion and gives a sense of well-being.

Angostura is a well-known brand of aromatic bitters, the most common type, which generally contains gentian, quassia and wild cherry bark. Like vanilla extract, bitters contain alcohol, and both are very potent —you wouldn’t want to drink either one plain. While most bitters brands are small-batch, a good rule of thumb is to look for bitters that use local or thoughtfully sourced herbs. Did you know?... ...In Trinidad and Tobago, Angostura bitters are often added to coffee – well worth trying!
