Cole GT, Hoch HC (eds): The Fungal Spore and Disease Initiation in Plants and Animals. Plenum, New York, 1991Everywhere there is water there are also fungi. Most fungi live on land, but a few live permanently in water. In grassland and woodland habitats fungi play key roles - without them most plants could not grow vigorously - indeed orchid seeds can germinate only when 'infected' by particular types of fungi. Some kinds of polypores have been used in dyeing of fabrics and for drying fishermen's artificial flies. The list of uses for fungi seems almost endless. Oh yes... and for aesthetic value (beauty) their form and colour diversity certainly rival flowers! The list of benefits we derive from fungi also goes on and on. One thing, however, could not go on without fungi, life on Earth would be impossible not just for us but for most other creatures with the possible exception of bacteria! Mycology, Fungal Taxonomy and Conservation Legislation The Science of Fungi S02E12 Jill Purce on Overtone Chanting and Ancestral Healing". Medicine Path Podcast. Archived from the original on 23 September 2020 . Retrieved 31 August 2020. A sensory as well as an intellectual pleasure... Accomplished, riveting and surprising at every turn... We owe a great debt to Sheldrake for lifting his eyes from the microscope for long enough to enlighten us about the wonders of fungi." This engaging book shines light on the hidden fungal connections that link plants, trees, and us. I thought I knew a lot about fungi, but I found much that was new to me, and exciting. Sheldrake is a rare scientist who is not afraid to speculate about the truly profound implications of their work. Avery good read.”

Yet as amazing as mushrooms are, they are just the above-ground extensions of the fungi below. The fungal world is a wild and fascinating place, and has shaped our environment in ways that we are only beginning to understand. The eight books below explore the Fungi Kingdom, sketch out its relationship to the human world, and reveal its paramount significance to life on this zany planet. Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World by Paul Stamets Entangled Lifeis a revelation. It is a radical, hopeful and important book and I couldn’t put it down. With elegance, wit and clarity Sheldrake engages us in the hidden world of fungi, a miraculous web of connections, interactions and communication that changes the way we need to look at life, the planet and ourselves.” a b c Cooke, Rachel (23 August 2020). Retrieved 31 August 2020.Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Shape Our Minds & Shape Our Futures, by Merlin Sheldrake The Amanita fungi, which we categorise as the family Amanitaceae, are by some authorities included in the family Plutaceae, along with Pluteus and Volvariella species. Amanita caesarea (above) occurs in southern Europe and is a prized edible mushroom. Deadly poisonous amanitas include the Deathcap, Amanita phalloides; and Destroying Angel, Amanita virosa. Most famous is Amanita muscaria, the Fly Agaric - a hallucinogenic mushroom that must therefore be treated as poisonous. On the subject of toxins and hallucinogens, Psilocybe semilaceata, the Magic Mushroom, contains Psilobin and Psilocybin, which are hallucinogenic substances; so do many other gilled fungi. Grisettes are also Amanita species, the most common being Amanita fulva, Amanita crocea and Amanita vaginata. Other mushrooms in the group include False Deathcap, Amanita excelsa (synonym Amanita spissa), and Blusher, Amanita rubescens. Fungi are familiar to us, eaten regularly in risottos or on top of pizzas, and spotted in woodlands. And yet at the same time, incredibly mysterious. As author Aliya Whitely says in her introduction, “There’s still so much to learn about these secretive forms of life, including the tantalising question of how much they communicate with each other, and with many other organisms. Perhaps they are even trying to communicate with us.” This is a simple yet captivating story of a woman who follows her intuition, views compassion as a strength, and dares to see the world differently.

Entangled Life is a revelation with life-changing consequences. I now realize how distorted my views on fungi have been, having been deeply educated in modern medicine. This book expanded my worldview and I hope it is read widely in the medical profession. We are in dire need of it.” The lives of fungi alone are fascinating, but the questions and wider implications that Sheldrake teases out from them are often truly astounding… an engrossing, captivating journey… rigorous, comprehensive, perspective-altering… if this book is any indication, [Sheldrake] has an exciting career in not only science but also literature ahead of him.”Wondrous... [A] marvelous tour of these diverse and extraordinary life forms... eye-opening... humans should consider fungi among the greatest of earth’s marvels.” A truffle dog hunting in a forest of truffle oaks in Veyrines de Vergt near Sarlat, France. Deeply engaging and constantly surprising... The magic of mushrooms is not merely mind-expanding... it might expand the very concept of mind... balanced, well-informed... beautifully written.” In this extraordinary book about underground tree communication and the ‘wood wide web’, Simard shows us how powerful storytelling can be in our discussions about the natural world. She takes us through her academic career in the forests of Canada and North America, working on tree plantations and eventually discovering that trees coordinate themselves through a network of mycorrhizal fungi that heals, feeds and sustains the entire forest.A 'fairy ring' consists of fungus fruiting bodies emerging around the edge of a mycelial disc that expands from its point of origin. The diameter of the fairy ring gives a rough guide to the age of the fungal organism (the underground mycelium, that is - not the mushrooms, which are merely its fruitbodies). Sheldrake awakens the reader to a shapeshifting, mind-altering, animate world that not only surrounds us but intimately involves us as well. A joyful exploration of the most overlooked and enigmatic kingdom of life, and one that expanded my appreciation of what it means to be alive.” Identification: Are cup-shaped and scarlet, however can also be bright orange. Stems attach to the leaf litter making them appear as hollow bowls lying on the woodland floors. Cups are roughly 4cm across. Collins Fungi Guide: The Most Complete Field Guide to the Mushrooms & Toadstools of Britain & Ireland You may never look at fungi in the same way… Entangled Life is an eye-opening exploration of this mysterious taxonomic kingdom… a journey into an untapped world.
