I think it’s more of a revolution than a reformation.” Since the world first caught a glimpse of Manuel Gagneux’s Satanic sigil, Zeal & Ardor have been on an upward trajectory. We all know the story of how the project started, but few know where it is going, and this self-titled effort is by far the strongest and most accomplished record the Swiss-American outfit have released. A continuation on the unique sounds of earlier records, Z&A’s third LP embraces more post and industrial elements, often driving headfirst into a roaring cacophony. The pure cathartic joy of barking ‘ death to the holy’ cannot be underestimated. (LM)

It might have taken some time to get used to their newfound superstardom but there were certainly compensations. Jason says the coolest things he was able to do was to build his own Chophouse Records Studio and buy the house in which he still lives. He was also able to further indulge his passion for “buying, selling and trading guitars”, although he says there’s “nothing really extravagant – not like Kirk's Les Paul”.Perhaps it’s most exciting to think of that album title as a misnomer, where, in celestial terms, the state of supernova is one of the last in the life-cycle of a star. Because, for Nova Twins, it feels like this is just the beginning. (SL) It also opened up the entire world to them, on a truly rarefied scale. The distance Metallica’s name had travelled can be summed up in a story Jason tells about spotting his band’s merch in the least likely of places. It was at the beginning of 2019 when blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus revealed that the band’s forthcoming record could see the California pop-punk kings taking a step into uncharted territories. Brad Holsworth: “Corey’s vocals are lethal on this album. It’s been a while since Slipknot have shown this side to their music, I’d probably say since Iowa or All Hope Is Gone. The lyrics are a mix of so many emotions from anger, sadness, and a feeling of chaos. It’s just a freakin’ masterpiece in the way the band put it together.”

You can hear this intuitive approach across the resulting 79 minutes. The Silent Man crashes into view like a rudely awakened giant, before inculcating a sense of stillness with echoing slide and organ that only serves to intensify the guitarmageddon that follows. Elsewhere, Nightwalkers is all God-cursing howls and scowling seriousness before, inexplicably, dropping into a propulsive drum and synths groove that would not have been out of place in a goth nightclub circa 1980. And labyrinthine, 13-minute closer The Fall is both beautiful and terrifying.

Since 1993, the magazine has held an annual awards ceremony to mark the most successful bands in the interests of their readers. The awards became one of Britain's most recognised events by the now defunct Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums, often listing some of the winners in their annual round-up of the previous year. The event is presented by major music celebrities, with many others outside the industry who attend the event. [56] In a world where the concepts of ‘genre’ and ‘heaviness’ are becoming more and more disparate and divided, Michigan experimentalists The Armed released perhaps the most subversive record of the year. From its cover looking more like a polished fashion shoot and the corpse-painted music videos, to the fact that nobody is actually sure who’s in the band and who is just trolling, this group of eight (possibly more, or less) musicians found a delicious disharmony in ULTRAPOP. Extreme in its intent and not just sound, everything was pushed to the nth degree, building up layer after distorted layer, engulfing the listener in a record that somehow straddled the worlds of Throbbing Gristle, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Les Savy Fav and, dare we say it, pop music. An album best served whole, there were countless sides to the polygon and punishment – from the claustrophobic BIG SHELL to the hyperactive MASUNAGA VAPORS to the oddly sun-drenched BAD SELECTION. No matter what genre you ascribe to ULTRAPOP, it's determined to be misunderstood. All we know is, we like it. (LM) Sometimes, being a ‘supergroup’ doesn’t quite live up to its title. For L.S. Dunes, though, that’s simply not the case. While these five emo and post-hardcore heroes (members of My Chemical Romance, Circa Survive, Thursday and Coheed & Cambria) joined forces this year purely for the love of music, the quality of Past Lives has seen them become so much more than just another side-project.
