My husband Jonathan is from New York City and we met when I was living in Manhattan during grad school. In 2011,just before we got married, he accepted a job as a rabbi in Silicon Valley which prompted our move to California. Unexpectedly we found an ad for a lovely little cabin in the woods that took my work in a direction I would have never imagined. I started my Forest Feast blog when we moved to the cabin just as a new personal project. Inspired by local, seasonal ingredients in our weekly CSA box, I created (and continue to make) “photographic recipe illustrations” that are mostly vegetarian and laid out visually. I am so grateful that the blog led to books and with it all, I hope to inspire healthy recipe ideas anyone can make–dishes that are easy enough after a long day at work, yet impressive enough for a party. Escape to our remarkable hidden woodland nestled amongst the Chiltern Hills and indulge in a foraged feast cooked over an open flame inspired by the wild ingredients that grow in abundance around us. My second cookbook, The Forest Feast for Kids, was released February 2016 and is an adapted version of my first book for kids.It includes the 20 of the most kid-friendly favorites from The Forest Feast, along with 20 new recipes, plus several ideas for kids’ parties. There are also easy-to-follow instructions for techniques, measurements, and other helpful kitchen aides.It’s designed for kids cook from it themselves, with an emphasis on colorful produce. It is absolutely gorgeous, colorful, and has incredible pictures. Would I make the recipes from it? Maybe one or two. Jonathan and I still live in the woods and we now have 3 kids, Ezra (born 2014) and Max (born 2017) and Winnie (born 2020).

I’m totally charmed by this book.” ―Epicurious The following work, entitled The Forest Feast, reflects my interest in rural communities, collectivity, rituality, and the evolving nature of forested landscapes as a result of anthropic influences and of the coexistence of people, nature, and technology. I made an avocado and banana smoothie that was amazing, and I have been making it ever since. But apart from that, there were maybe a small handful of recipes that I would be interested in making. So I returned the book to the store. On to the food, I tried a total of six recipes out of the book and I am afraid 3 were misses and 3 were maybe keeps, with nothing that really blew us away.

The illustrations and photos were lush. I could see framing some of them. The cookbook made me feel happy reading it. We love jigsaw puzzles. Love them. And these Magic Puzzles are amazing – incredibly inventive. The creative minds behind these just blow us away. We’re actually going to frame one of the puzzle pictures/guides for my studio. Incredible stuff. The only other puzzles that come close are Sue Coccia’s puzzles for Liberty, which are admittedly wonderful but also very expensive.You cannot go wrong with any of these. My one complaint is that there are only six. We’d happily buy more!

Join author Erin Gleeson for an in-person, in-store event in conversation with cookbook author Georgia Freedman who writes The California Table. The event is at Omnivore Books on Food in San Francisco and they’ll discuss Erin’s latest book, The Forest Feast Road Trip. There will be an author talk in the shop followed by an outdoor book signing with refreshments. This A-frame had beautiful midcentury touches and was perched in the trees near Big Bear Lake.
