About this deal

Docusate is occasionally used in pregnancy and there is no evidence to suggest it will harm your baby. However, other types of laxative are usually tried first, because there is more information to say that they are safe. Docusate and breastfeeding The Dulcolax range is used for the short term treatment of occasional constipation, always read the label. Medicated suppositories are a typically reliable, fast-acting form of stimulant laxative that are inserted into the rectum. These suppositories, which may contain bisacodyl or glycerin, help move the poo out of the body by providing lubrication and stimulation. They stimulate the bowel muscles in the intestine to help encourage a bowel movement within minutes.

Enema – squeeze the tube of liquid gently into your anus. The information leaflet which comes with your docusate will explain how to do this. You should not take DulcoEase with laxatives containing liquid paraffin (mineral oil). What other medicines contain docusate sodium?Docusate also stimulates the nerve endings in the walls of the large bowel (colon) and rectum. This makes the muscles in the bowel wall contract more often and with increased force, which moves the stools through the colon to the rectum so that the bowel can be emptied. Whatever the cause, constipation can be uncomfortable. It may make you feel bloated and heavy or generally ‘off colour’. Sometimes it causes headaches. The safety of docusate sodium for use during pregnancy has not been fully established, though it has been in widespread use for many years with no reported harmful effects. As with all medicines, you should get medical advice from your doctor before taking DulcoEase if you are pregnant. DulcoEase capsules contain the active ingredient docusate sodium, which is a type of medicine called a laxative. Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age should generally start treatment by taking one capsule three times a day. If this is not effective you can take a dose up to five times a day if needed, spread over the course of the day. Once your symptoms start to improve you should take the medicine less frequently.Taking an extra dose of docusate as a one-off is unlikely to harm you, but it is a good idea to drink lots of water. You may get diarrhoea and stomach pain, but this will usually get better within 1 or 2 days. Liquid – this comes with a plastic cup or spoon to measure the dose. Do not use a kitchen spoon as it will not give the right amount. If you do not have a cup or spoon, ask your pharmacist for one. When you've swallowed it, drink plenty of water or have another drink, such as milk or orange juice. Capsules – the normal dose is 1 capsule, taken 3 times a day. Do not take more than 5 capsules in a day. If your doctor or midwife recommends docusate, instead of lactulose or Fybogel, it’s usually ok to use this medicine while breastfeeding. The amounts of docusate found in breast milk are probably very small and are unlikely to affect your baby. Docusate works in two ways. It lowers the surface tension of hard, dry stools that have accumulated in the bowel, allowing water and fats to penetrate them. This makes the stools softer and easier to pass. This can be particularly helpful for people with piles or an anal fissure.

But before we get into the detailed DulcoEase stool softener review the most obvious place to start with is what the manufacturer, retailer or brand have to say. Description from Waitrose/DulcoEase You will usually feel more comfortable within 1 or 2 days of treatment. Reduce the dose as your condition gets better. Enema – normally 1 tube of liquid is all you need. If you need a second dose, you can use it later in the day or the next day. DulcoEaseCapsules contains docusate sodium. For the prevention and treatment of chronic constipation. Prevention of hard, dry stools and reduction of straining at stools in the presence of conditions like haemorrhoids or anal fissuresNever take 2 doses at the same time. Fibre supplements are traditionally considered as a first treatment. Docusate sodium oral solution is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine, in both paediatric and adult strengths. Chances are you probably know all there is to know about Superdrug, but if you don’t then here’s a little more detail about them. Stool softeners are just that — products that help make hard, dry, painful poo softer. They work by softening the poo in the intestine, which makes it easier and more comfortable to pass. When used as directed, stool softeners are a safe, gentle way to keep things moving.

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with DulcoEase. Just because a side effect is stated here doesn't mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect. Drink plenty of fluids (6 to 8 glasses a day) while you are taking docusate or your constipation may get worse. What if I forget to take it? If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you can try to treat constipation without taking a medicine. This involves eating more fibre and drinking plenty of fluids. It may also help to do gentle exercise. Docusate sodium may pass into breast milk so should be used with caution during breastfeeding. As with all medicines, you should get medical advice from your doctor before taking DulcoEase if you are breastfeeding.
