To do His will for our lives in the flesh in earth. When our tasks for Him in earth are completed, He will call us home and we will ascend to Heaven and ultimately live eternally in the new heaven and new earth. I am a lifelong spiritual truth-seeker, entrepreneur, author and free sovereign human that entered this dimension in Northamptonshire, England, in the late 1960s. With how image-conscious Christianity has become, I'm surprised that this response to Rob Bell's Love Wins doesn't take many cues from the book that inspired it. Instead of echoing Bell's stylistic flourishes, postmodern structure, and graphic design obsession, Galli writes in a straightforward, often dreary way, that Hell is real and people who do not accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour will go there. I point this out because this plodding, dogmatic text will almost certainly not appeal to the same people who feel excited and moved by Bell's writings, which begs the question - why bother writing it? I guess it's to give the establishment talking points that can be trotted out when some fresh-eyed idealistic hipster starts talking about making the world a better place NOW instead of worrying about eternal damnation. After God tells him that, because of the sins of his people, things may actually get worse, Habakkuk questions whether the punishment fits the crime: O Lord my God, my Holy One, you who are eternal— and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” He will swallow up death forever. Mary's question assumes God will do something good and great, and seeks to know how it will unfold. Zechariah is not at all sure that God is good and great, and seeks proof. Mark Galli is a historian and a former editor of Christian History, one of my favorite magazines of all time (all 100 issues are on my shelf). With his grasp of theological history, Mark is acutely aware of something many modern authors, and I don’t just mean Rob Bell, appear not to grasp: God hasn’t given this generation—so accustomed to opinion polls that want to know what we think—the luxury of remaking theology on the fly and redefining the gospel. It's putting God on trial. The difference appears in one little additional clause Zechariah adds to his question. Mary simply asks, "How can this happen?" Zechariah asks, "How can I be sure this will happen?" Strong's 3956: All, the whole, every kind of. Including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole. Yahweh your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will bring you quietness with His love. He will delight in you with shouts of joy.”But no matter the questions, here's the point: for some, these questions arise out of a trusting faith. For others, they arise out of a desire to have God prove himself on human terms. While Jesus as true man is asking the question behind all our questions—Can God be trusted to be good and just?—Jesus as true God is answering that question with another: "Can you trust and love the God who will die for you?" And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, nor will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the first things have passed away."
