A Ladybird Book: Climate Change is an in-house project adapted from the Ladybird Expert title, published in 2017. The new title is illustrated by Aleesha Nandhra and has been updated with new climate data, an additional spread on the youth climate change movement and a new afterword, written last year, by the former Prince of Wales. Ladybird books, however, did not feature in Steve Jones’s childhood in Aberystwyth. ‘I was a Welsh speaker and couldn’t really read English, and I was also a complete nerd. Mostly I read books about geology.’ The book could easily have fallen foul of the often poisonous political wrangling over climate policies in royalist media such as the Daily Mail or Express, if the tone was not carefully chosen. As a consequence, the impacts of climate change are becoming worse and we saw temperatures reach an incredible 40C in the UK last summer.The illustrations by Ruth Palmer deserve a special mention – they are attractive and very evocative of those of the original Ladybird books.

Ganz ehrlich, ohne solide Vorkenntnisse ist dieses Buch alles andere als nützlich und hilfreich. Da ist in wenigen Worten und einigen hingeworfenen Beispielen so viel Inhalt verwurstet, dass jemand ohne solide Hintergrundinfos vieles nicht wirklich verstehen wird. I wonder, would Prince Charles be able to put his name to such a book at some future time when he might be our king? Or would the subject be regarded as too political? This was a very worthwhile project and the first author’s celebrity status will get the messages to a wider audience than would otherwise be the case. This book, published today, is one of the ‘Expert’ series and the three authors can rightly be classed as such (but even if they weren’t, this book has been peer-reviewed by an impressive panel of scientists). It is a clear, unstuffy treatment of a very important subject. Einfach dargestelltest Thema bedeutet leider nicht zwangsweise einfaches Englisch.
