About this deal

The mystery of Millicent’s nature - who she is, and what made her that way - is a central driving force behind this story’s propulsive pacing. Narrated in the first person by Millicent’s husband, MY LOVELY WIFE immerses readers in a mentality and worldview that justifies the unthinkable - and does so with spine-tingling authenticity.

So okay, I'm not the author and the author chose to not take that route but I think if you're going to include something as dramatic as that in the novel perhaps touch on it a little more. The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club – On November 11, ninety-year-old General Fentiman is found dead in an armchair at the Bellona Club.

Most novels do not start by introducing a central character that is deceased before the story unfolds, but “The Lovely Bones” begins with the main character saying, “My name was Susie Salmon […] I was fourteen when I was murdered […]” (Sebold 1). For all this book’s murderous schemes, the vast majority of its violence takes place off the page - a quality which I consider an asset in this particular case. BLOOD SISTERS will be published in September, but thanks to Vanessa and her publisher, we’re able to get an exclusive early glimpse into the book right here in today’s blog post!

I’m pretty sure I say this every year, but 2022 has truly been another outstanding year for crime fiction readers. There have been a number of questions asking how to add drum fills without changing any other tracks in a song. This unfairness, although poorly developed, was at least a cause of sympathy until Susie decides to forcibly correct it at the expense of others. Also, she says she doesn't want to go after her murderer while in the host, that's real fucking nice, Susie, the whole book's about you wishing you hadn't died and the strain it put on your family, and you'd rather take a dick in a bathtub then stop him from raping/killing more children.

Usually, I'm not much of an audiobook gal, but if there is a version which was narrated by Saoirse Ronan, I'm gonna listen to it! After devoting my entire October to-read list to supernatural thrillers for spooky season, I was ready to get back to my psychological suspense roots this month—and ideally, I wanted something that was a little bit more lighthearted and “popcorn-y” for a change of pace. Her rapist and murderer is a creepy loser while somehow being the dullest of all of Sebold's numerous dull characters. Rather than focusing on blood and guts, Downing focuses on character development, entertainment value, and satisfying plot twists - and the result is pitch-perfect psychological suspense perfect for your next weekend binge-read. Today I wanted to round up 5 mysteries I personally love that all involve Christmas—but this blog post has a little twist! In today’s blog post, I’m recapping my experience at Iceland Noir 2022, including a day-by-day recap of the festival, lots of photos, a rundown of the books I took home from the festival, and more! As a crime reader, there are few things better than reading from the perspective of a really well-drawn villain, and MY LOVELY WIFE delivers exactly that. I chose to watch paint chip away, and pick up dust bunnies with recycled paper (I didn't have a broom) rather than finish this book. Much of my hatred of this novel results from its inexplicable popularity and commendation from people who have a responsibility to promote reading.

Christmas is around the corner, and if you’re a reader who likes to theme your reads to the season, today’s blog post is for you! This book tells the story of the most horrific thing a family could ever endure, the murder of a loved one, a child. It’s dark, twisted, completely riveting reading material, and if you’re anything like me, I’m betting you’ll find yourself oddly horrified by how sympathetic the character of Millicent’s husband can prove himself to be. And the moment when Susie's father destroys the ships in bottles is just the best; it keeps popping on my Youtube because I just watched so many times. After thinking about it more and more, I was truly embarrassed to have not seen these dark and disturbing connotations, made all the worse for the fact that the author serves this up as the feel good ending - not noticing the irony at all of having the main character who was raped and violated in turn rape and violate a friend, while denouncing the first act as a heinous crime and lauding the second act as happy ending?Grossman confined his reading to the zeros on the check accompanying the publisher's blurb or else has some sort of vitamin deficiency that causes his brain to process ham-handed tripe as "beautiful" art. Those who have read the book may not have even noticed Susie's complete abandonment of moral sense or care for the woman she violates.
