About this deal

If you could read together with your child then I’d suggest you do so as there can be quite a number of good discussions ranging from bereavement, grief, bullying, etc. The paper planes he makes and how he has to adjust them if necessary are rather a good metaphor for other things kids need to deal with in life and how they must adjust in different situations. I would recommend readers from year 3 onwards though only if your child is an advanced reader in year 3. Adult caregivers should make a deliberate, conscious decision about when their child is old enough to read this novel.

Although designed to appeal to kids, this fun-filled craft book will also delight any adult interested in aerodynamics. However the writing style was lacking - written in present tense and like spoken language, which as a teacher is exactly what I want to move kids away from. When it’s time to show your kids how to fold a humble piece of paper into a soaring jet, don’t stumble around andhastily construct one from the poor memory of your youth — one that takes a disappointing nosedive as soon as it leaves yourfingertips. Each are handled very well – just enough focus without tipping the mood too seriously and Dylan thinks his way through each challenge and you can see him really learning things as he gets through each round. When he discovers he has a talent for folding and flying paper planes, Dylan begins a journey to reach the World Junior Paper Plane Championships in Japan.

Therefore, it is mostly a fun read but your discussions could be as deep as you like by your guidance as parents / teachers.

This novel, in my opinion, should be nominated for late primary school / early secondary school reading.

The world is seen in the eyes of an innocent 12 year old boy named Niko who is trapped in the Bosnian war with his family. I think the story line is fabulous because Dylan is getting opportunities to fly paper planes in Sydney when he lives in a very small place in outback Western Australia. Worland is probably best known at the moment for his adult action novels but he’s also worked in TV and on movies, including Farscape and Bootmen. Ashamedly, I was aware of very little of the Civil War which savaged the former Yugoslavia in the early 90s in spite of the fact that I was living and working in Europe at the time.Fold up the Gargoyle, which excels at loops and dives, and the Concorde 500, modeled after the fastest passenger plane ever built. Now take what was the top edge that you previously folded down (Step 6) and fold it back up at the point where its edge meets the creases from the previous step.
