About this deal

Finn wrote The Woman in the Window in first person, which leaves more room to explain the intricacies of the plot. Throughout the novel, Anna mentions her love of film noir and Alfred Hitchcock, through which Mallory draws the comparison between The Woman in the Window and the Hitchcock film, Rear Window. She is startled by Ethan in her room, where he confesses that he has psychopathic tendencies, that he has been sneaking into her home at night to watch her, and that he has stalked other women as well.

Tom and Kate, who is pregnant, are eating in a silent restaurant, trying to “go slow” and turn off the Feed for a few hours while around them everyone communicates online. The chapters are short and hard-hitting, making the fast-moving plot zip by even faster ("This is the LAST chapter. When Katie is murdered, Anna believes she has witnessed the act of violence that kills her; however, neither the police detectives who become involved in the case nor her tenant David believe her because Anna refers to the murder victim as Jane Russell, who is still alive and well. I never met either Mott, but occasionally I check in online: his Linkedin profile, her Facebook page. Anna gets her dose of the outside world by people watching, observing the lives of her neighbours, like the Millers, through her window with her camera.

The novel it was based on, by AJ Finn, was part of the post-Gone Girl boom in domestic thrillers centred on fractured female protagonists, and after David Fincher’s adaptation became a smash, Fox hoped for a repeat success, nabbing the rights with speed. The unreliable-narrator trope can inspire audience skepticism, but Wright does a great job of making Anna’s perspective the focal point of observation for the audience as well. The structure and setting are effective enough in putting you on edge, uncertain how events will unfold but sure something bad will happen. The first major twist is made so blindingly obvious from the very beginning that it’s close to an insult that Wright reveals it as if we don’t already know. The Woman in the Window suffers from the usual domestic thriller malady: an intriguing premise and a strong start that never quite materializes into a satisfying narrative. The film follows an agoraphobic woman ( Amy Adams) who begins to spy on her new neighbors ( Gary Oldman, Fred Hechinger, and Julianne Moore) and is witness to a crime in their apartment. There was one surprise that was ‘really’ big for me — so much so -that I said to myself: “HOT DAMN, how do you like those crackers”?
