With the horrific fate of millions of people, it is nice to hear the story of a heroic Dita that has overcome so much in her lifetime.

Set against the background of this horrific camp, The Librarian of Auschwitz is a beautifully written book and I wish I had read it before going there. THE LIBRARIAN OF Auschwitz is a very poignant, raw, and thought provoking read, it's an atmospheric and powerful read. and out of respect for her and this novel, I will read as often and as many books as I can and be grateful for the unbridled access. Guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes ( much like anything published about the happenings at Auschwitz) this graphic novel is very creatively crafted. Having studied a bit of translation at uni, and generally being pretty awful at it, I know how difficult it is to do a translation justice.L'amour pour les livres de Dita m'a touchée ainsi que sa force et sa volonté de faire en sorte que les gens autour d'elle se sentent bien.

I didn't know about the Theresienstadt Family Camp until this book so it was really informative for me as well. Not only was this book about Dita and her family, but I also learnt of other victims of the Nazi regime, whose stories I had not read before. This novel is one that could easily be recommended or taught alongside Elie Wiesel's Night and The Diary of Anne Frank and a text that, once read, will never be forgotten. A clove of garlic being smuggled and sold for a tiny bit of soap whilst I’d just used 6 of them in a curry with my washing machine on.

I only vaguely knew about books, but never about the librarian running such a clandestine operation in a death camp like Auschwitz. Dita is only fourteen and yet she strives to do her job as the books are a link to a world of sanity. Given that the story is based on Edita Krause's actual experience, and her life intersects with other historical prisoners at Auschwitz, other accounts are weaved into the storyline such as Freddy Hirsch and Anne Frank. As a summarized version of the novel, it did incredibly well at introducing some really complex characters and stories that have me immediately adding the full length to my TBR.While life in the ghetto is hardly perfect, circumstance deals a bad hand to Dita when she is transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. There were points in the story where I felt he lost sight of the story, and it read a little like a history book. But it is inconsistent in content and this would probably not be appropriate for children ages 8-12. Those who are hesitant to pick up a 360 page book about a subject, have no such qualms about reading a shorter, graphic novel of the same. This book is based around Dita an Auschwitz survivor, and with some non-fiction added the author was able to create a compelling story of bravery, survival and how magnificent the strength of the human spirit can be.
