David has been a resident of Austerlands for more than 40 years and has been involved with various committees over the years.

I thank him for his hard work and time he has spent to secure the field, we must also thank our community and Scouthead the Austerlands Band Committee for their support." Benches and picnic tables have been installed and an award winning garden area developed by the group in conjunction with Waterhead Academy. We have many happy memories of coffee mornings and themed evening meals. You both have supported us and we will miss your company at our meetings. And Alison Clowes, the Royal British Legion standard bearer, returned to the hills after from representing Saddleworth at the televised service of remembrance at London’s Royal Albert Hall attended The Queen and Royal family on Saturday night.Event organiser David Needham said: “Wewere particularly pleased to see more and more children attending the event, and the assembly was captivated by 10 weekold Jase Johnson (see picture above), a village resident, proudly wearing his poppy in support of his Great Granddad’s Uncle, Thomas Burns,of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Ray, 68, who had a distinguished career as a top flight professional rugby league player with Oldham and later Keighley, said: “We had very loyal and respected customers plus tremendous staff. Meanwhile, astunning suspended carpet of poppies offered a dramatic contrast to Diggle’s contribution to Remembrance (see above). ALL SMILES: Left to right, Councillor Robert Knotts, Councillor Pam Byrne, chair of Saddleworth parish council, Joan Sykes, chair of Scouthead and Austerlands Community Group, and David Needham, secretary of the Scouthead and Austerlands Whit Friday Brass Band Contest Committee

Here, at Pots and Pans on hills above Saddleworth, they gathered to share memories of, family, loved ones and friends who were never return to share these stunningly dramatic vistas. OVER moorland polished by bright sunshine, they came in their hundreds to pay tribute at one of Britain’s most uniquememorials to those lost in conflict. Mayor of Austerlands Stuart Cook and Councillor Kevin Dawson, recently elected chair of Saddleworth Parish Council, jointly did the honours for the new marking at Dawson’s Field.Parish cllr Barbara Beeley who launched the Fun Day said: “I am pleased the field has finally been transferred to the Parish Council and will be protected so many more fun days can be held in years to come.” This will secure the Whit Friday Band Contest for the Scouthead Contest Committee and use for other community activities and further demonstrate its use is needed for this community. The annual Band Contest is a tradition David has been very keen to promote and keep alive. He is a very pro-active member of the committee and prepares the magazine. Hymns were lead by members from Dobcross Brass Monkeys, and wreaths were laid by Saddleworth Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Jamie Curley and Oldham East and Saddleworth MP, Debbie Abrahams, GMP Sergeant Neil Barker and representatives from Royal British Legion, Scouts and other groups, including Dvestones WI. A UNIQUE local tradition has seen a community champion honoured… with a silver clog iron. Joan Sykes, centre, the new Mayor of austerlands with outgoing Mayor Anita Aspinall and ex-Mayor Roger Fielding

A spokesperson for the Scouthead and Austerlands Community Group praising the couple said: “We’d like to thank them for all help and commitment given to the group.

The field, which sits alongside the A62 Huddersfield Road, hosts the Scouthead and Austerlands Whit Friday Brass Band Contest and annual Family Fun Day, as well being used by local children and dog walkers. In 1985 he launched the Saddleworth Olympics which has now become an annual event and a tradition itself,” added the citation. And over the years, the pub has collected a host of brewing industry related accolades and several distinguished awards for its beautiful external floral displays. Austerlands, which has just two shops and a restaurant, and neighbour Scouthead are too slight to have their own associations. CllrByrne, current chairman of the Saddleworth Parish Council, is believed she is the first person holding that title to attend at Austerlands on a Remembrance Sunday.
