Early career Served in the Second World War, then wrote scripts for BBC Radio before going freelance in the mid-1950s. The other way to recall MacInnes at his best is to talk to his family. Kate Thirkell, who married MacInnes's half-brother Lance, recalls MacInnes as 'a very intelligent, very interesting and very unhappy man. The novel is divided into four sections. Each details a particular day in the four months that spanned the summer of 1958.
